Streaming Revenues Now Surpass $1 Billion in the US (up 59%)
The $1 billion figure is not as impressive as the growth rate figure. Which is 59% growth from 2011.
http://www.digitalmusicnews.com/perm...VMmoIp2Xklr6mQ
2011 streaming revenue: $651.2 million USD
2012 streaming revenue: $1032.8 million USD
This is an increase of 59%.
Summary of the 4 Big Revenue Drivers right now:
Streaming: $1,032.8 million USD (up 59%)
Singles Download: $1,623.6 million USD (up 6.7%)
Album Download: $1,204.8 million USD (up 12.5%)
Physical CD Album: $2,532 million USD (down 18.3%)
There is a reason why Apple, Google and Amazon are now negotiating with the major labels for an on-demand subscription service like Spotify/Rhapsody. When these 3 giants market their streaming service, it will only take off even more.

It's possible that streaming might overtake Singles Download in the next 24 months or so.
2012 Streaming: $1,032.8 million USD (up 59%)
2012 Singles Download: $1,623.6 million USD (up 6.7%)
If streaming grow 40% in 2013 and download grow 6.7% in 2013, the figure would be
2013 Streaming: $1,445 mil
2013 Singles Download: $1,732 mil
The gap is closing pretty fast.

Very interesting. It seems the streaming industry might become the main platform for music after all.

You don't need an unlimited data plan for streaming Spotify.
You can put up to 3,333 songs on OFF-LINE MODE with Spotify on your smartphone to listen to. It won't use even 1MB of your data.

iTunes NEEDS to get streaming QUICKLY. The cloud was a good direction towards this streaming.
But I still like the option of owning some music, while streaming songs i kinda like on occasion.
I hate having two programs for two different things.
Can someone tell me if i can put my library from a hard drive into spotify and just use spotify using already owned music in case i want to download from Amazon? I still like owning some music.

You can. It automatically puts it in 'My Local Files' or 'My Library' in Spotify if it's anywhere on your hard drive.

Here's what it would like when streaming start to be the biggest revenue driver. Example is Sweden where streaming is greater than download + physical CD combined.
http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/indus...08102222.story
Sweden music market total 2012: $144.8 million
Subscription music 2012: $83.4 million (up ?%)
Itunes/Amazon/Google download 2012: $9.27 million (down ?%)
physical CD 2012: $52.1 million (down 12%)

if singles download continue at this rate, its total revenue will be $1.848 billion in 2014
If streaming grows 35% in 2013 and 35% in 2014, it will be $1.882 billion in 2014.
Which mean there is a real possibility that streaming in the USA could surpass Singles Download in 21 months time.
It will happen one day. It's just a matter of when.

2003 CD Revenue: $11.2 billion
2012 CD Revenue: $2.5 billion
a decline of 77.5%
http://www.billboard.com/biz/article...h-were-greatly
The one thing everybody has correctly predicted is that the CD would decline. CD revenues fell 77.5% to $2.5 billion in 2012 from $11.2 billion in 2003, according to RIAA numbers released last week. The deepest losses occurred in 2007 and 2008, when CD revenues dropped over $1.9 billion each year. Total revenues suffered badly as a result in those years, falling 9.4% and 17.6% in 2007 and 2008, respectively. More recent years have not been as bad. After four straight years of deficits that exceeded 20% (from 2007 to 2010) CD revenues declined 8.5% in 2011 and 18.3% in 2012.
The RISE and FALL of the dominant music consumption method over the past 30 years:
What, if anything, will replace streaming?

http://www.billboard.com/biz/article...-decade-report
Quote:
After nearly a decade since selling its first digital song, Apple Inc.'s iTunes continues to dominate with a 63% unit share of the U.S. market for digital music downloads in the fourth quarter, according to estimates released Tuesday by the NPD Group Inc.
Amazon.com's MP3 store remained No. 2 with 22% market share, NPD said. The estimates are based on units, rather than revenue. Because iTunes discounts far less often than rival retailers, its dollar share of the $2.9 billion U.S. download market is likely to be greater than its unit share, though NPD did not provide dollar share figures. In terms of customers, a commanding eight out of 10 digital music buyers downloaded their albums or tracks from iTunes in the fourth quarter.
"There's a belief that consumers don't need to buy music because of streaming options," said Russ Crupnick, NPD's senior vice president of industry analysis. "In fact, streamers are much more likely than the average consumer to buy music downloads."

USA download market in 2012: $2.9 billion.
Itunes: 63% market share (units)
Amazon MP3: 22% market share (units)
USA streaming market in 2012: $1.03 billion (growing at 59% from 2011)

That trophy on the shelf is about to get much lighter. That's because the RIAA has now decided to radically alter its formula for calculating Gold and Platinum certifications by incorporating streams. Specifically, 100 streams will equal one paid download or sale, according the freshly-jiggered formula. This looks like a change that affects singles, instead of albums, but we're awaiting RIAA comment on that apsect.

100 streams = 1 paid downloads or sales
Look like streaming is getting too big to be ignored
