Countries that don't pay artists: USA, North Korea, Iran
Countries that don't pay artists royalties for playing their music on the radio: USA, North Korea, Iran and Rwanda.
Countries that pay artists royalties for playing their music on the radio: every other country
Radio Advertisement generated $17.4 billion USD in 2011.
Of that, the artists got nothing and probably paid the radio stations instead (in term of legal modern day payola, free concert tickets, etc...)

In the US, terrestrial radio corporations have successfully argued the "exposure" point in order to not pay artists for using their music (incidentally, the only other countries where this happens is Iran, North Korea and Rwanda). This despite the US industry pulling in $17.4bn in advertising in 2011 alone
US radio says it shouldn't have to pay as it's "promotional", and helps sell records. An argument to which Rob Dickins, the former chairman of Warner Music UK, once replied:
"It's promotional when you play my record when I want you to!"

Good news is that Internet Radio like Pandora has to pay the artists.
Bad news: Internet radio is like 8% compare to over the air radio which is 92% of overall radio play

Well, radio gives artists exposure so really it's for their own good.

You already have instant exposure to hundreds of millions of people, what else do you want?

Over here in Spain we got SGAE, which is an equivalent of ASCAP; they're the ones in charge when it comes to protect intellectual property, they make sure everyone pays for playing someone's song, i mean, EVeRYONE: radio stations, hair salons, supermarkets, shopping departments... It's been proven that these people hace crossed lines they shouldn't have crossed, for instance, sending spies to someone else's wedding to make sure they'd paid for the song playing at the cerimony, and of course, the big cats on SGAE have been discovered stealing money and cheating, for which have been condemned to jail, but nothing repairs the damage done by these abusing laws that now our Government wants to guard for once and for all...

The songwriters and producers of the song get paid though, which is why if youre an artist now you better be writing or producing on all your work.

Also, I forgot to mention, we have a tax here in my '' lovely country'' over blank CDs or USB enginees, in case these are used for illegal purposes... Funny, isn't it?
