Justin came back with an album that is in line with his last album. He did not pander to any of the fads that popped up in the past five years, and most importantly did not go the Euro/House/Dance/Bubblegum/Dubstep route. Many tried to say that his sound was dated, slandered him for working with Timbaland again, made S&T (a top 5, million+ seller) out to be a flop, said he should have mixed EDM into his music, and predicted that the album would underperform.
Now...he's #1 in a record breaking number of countries and his opening week is projected at OVER 600k. All with a sound that is supposedly "dated". An uncompromising and unapologetic throwback 2000s sounding R&B album that basically snubs EDM, Disney, indie and hipster pop. Is it safe to say that 20/20 is going to be instrumental in shifting tastes AWAY from the "pop sound" that has terrorized the public over the past five years?
Could this album, combined with the returns of other names like Beyoncé and Eminem later this year, make 2013 be the year that killed "happy" and "fun" dance/pop music; bringing back R&B and grittier Hip Hop and put everything back in order (the way things were pre-2008.)
And S&T isn't that successful either most of its success was because of JT's name. If it was some new upcoming artist(or anyone else in general) it wouldn't have charted high. After its peak, in 3/4 of the countries it charted in, it dropped like a rock.
No. Pop died back then because the Hot 100 was inaccurate and gave the misperception that people were obsessed with R&B when they weren't. Could another urban wave happen? Sure, but it won't be as encompassing as it was back then
I really hope R&B can be revived , but JT has built-in anticipation. I think his album sells because he's JT not because his music is "urban","Dated" etc
No, even though the album is borderline mediocre though.

Yet 'Suit & Tie' has spent only one week outside of the top 10 worldwide.
But it IS a Pop album So no. I think what's selling the album is anticipation for a new album from him and star power I think he also released an album at the time when trends are shifting and artists are allowed to smash with more than one or two different sounds.
