MAJOR RUMOR: Wii is NOT the Final Name (click for details)
Okay, so I was just fooling around on 1up.com earlier today and I came across an extremely interesting article. Unfortunately I lost the link so I'll just paraphrase.
Basically...Wii isn't trademarked. There's no record of a Wii trademark anywhere. And a search for Wii will turn up no trademarks. Remember, you can put TM at the end of anything but that doesn't mean it's trademarked. Rumor has it that Nintendo may possibly be putting Wii out there as a name to get people talking, and that the actual final name of the system will be revealed at E3.
Still, since releasing the Wii news, Nintendo has vehemently stated that Wii is indeed the final name. So, take this as you will. Again, although the trademark thing is indeed true (I checked), it is not known whether or not the other statements in this post are.
EDIT - So I went to the original source of information on this and there was an edit to the news story. It reads as such: 'Update: This just in from Nintendo on the subject of the missing Wii trademark: “Nintendo has filed many trademark applications for Wii. Trademark Web sites often take time to update, and you can expect the Wii trademarks to appear shortly.”'
True or not remains to be seen, but it's becoming more and more clear that Nintendo is going to have more than one ace up their sleeve at E3.
EDIT 2 - nintendowii.com has just recently been registered by Nintendo. Why does this matter? Because Wii is supposedly the name worldwide for the system...and some random dude in the UK bought the domain nintendo.co.uk. The trademark argument may be valid, but how in the world do you explain not even registering the website (or, for that matter, not taking legal action against someone who did)?
