Well, when she was promoting or shooting "House Of Wax" in Australia MTV showed her lypsinching (sp?) to an early version of "Screwed" at a club, so I really don't know if she can sing live or not.
PERSONALLY I don't think we can judge by her singing "happy birthday to you", but anyway.

I know what an octive is, Mariah can hit about 40 notes, which is 5 octives.

I don't know if the places that I saw saying Madonna had 1.5 octives are correct. But I could believe she might not have a recording that spans further than about 14 notes all together.
