Everyone knows that sex sells. Crooners like Trey Songz and Tank have the tendency to strip down to a tissue-thin undershirt onstage, while belting explicit lyrics using beautiful melodies. The crowd — mostly filled with women — subsequently erupts once said shirt is taken off. This is the formula and the hottest artists in the genre know how to play it up.
There’s something to be said about a man with toned muscles standing in a spotlight unable to keep his clothes on; it’s a fantasy for millions of ladies. These sexy singers peel off layers while the public keeps a close watch, reveling in the eye candy.
Here, TheDrop.fm finds 10 guys who, at some point, couldn’t keep their shirts on — not that we’re complaining. Check out some R&B Hot Bodies.
USHER:
Usher Raymond has always had one of R&B’s most banging bodies — that’s just a given. The Atlanta native is the prototype that younger folks like Chris Brown and Trey Songz have to admit to taking some direction from. The first time we saw Usher bare his beefy upper body was during the ‘Confessions’ era and he made us believe in the sex symbol image he was fostering.
The singer succeeded in making his body his claim to fame in addition to his voice and his dance steps. Even now, with a couple of kids and a recent divorce, Usher can still garner a few looks of longing from admirers.
D’Angelo
D’Angelo has struggled with his weight for years, even while most of the world gawked at his bare body in the video for 2000′s ‘Untitled (How Does It Feel).’ With his taut and toned muscles, no one could’ve guessed that the singer, born Michael Eugene Archer, ever had an issue with body image. We all simply indulged in what he was serving up. In the aforementioned video, nothing but D’Angelo’s smooth skin was on display as he sang lovingly into the camera while seemingly in the nude. He may look a little different these days with a plumper mid-section, but that ‘Untitled’ D’Angelo is how we’ll choose to remember him.
Luke James
Luke James was in the R&B industry for quite some time before debuting his first Def Jam single ‘I Want You’ in 2011. The songwriter, hailing from New Orleans, penned tracks for the likes of Britney Spears and Chris Brown before he graced the spotlight so when he dropped the video for his debut single, eyes were locked in his direction.
As James hit a perfect falsetto in the rain, every ripple in his chest glistened. He pleaded with the camera for his lady love, all while getting soaking wet in through his thin T-shirt. Luke James proves there’s room to be made for another bad body in R&B.
Chris Brown
If Chris Brown could keep his personal business more private and just let us look at him without a shirt, he’d be alright. In fact, he’d probably have more fans. The Virginia native has always been talented as a singer and dancer, but once he hit 18, we didn’t feel so bad about looking at his cutie potential. It’s his “mouth” on social media that presents him as a turn-off for critics, but again, that body is on point so we deal with it. The ‘Fortune’ creator is almost always exposing his tattooed frame onstage and it’s clear that those dance moves do a toned body good.
Tyrese
Tyrese has been a cutie since recording that Coca-Cola commercial back in 1994. His gorgeous smile against his creamy skin just made adolescent girls swoon, wondering if his body matched up to his flawless face. When Tyrese debuted his self-titled album just four years later, he had no qualms about showing off his Adonis-like arms on the LP’s cover. Then once he started acting in films like ‘Baby Boy’ and ‘Transformers,’ fans found that he looked just as amazing with clothes on — although they still preferred to see Black Ty without a shirt on. Once he hits the road with Tank and Ginuwine as R&B supergroup TGT next year, it’s quite possible that he’ll be fulfilling that wish.
Omarion
It may seem wrong to look at Omarion with lustful eyes since many of us recall his days fronting the boy band B2K, but Maybach O is a grown man now and we can’t take our eyes off him. The ‘M.I.A.’ crooner doesn’t undress often but when he gives a glimpse of those biceps and tattooed chest, his B2K days sure seem long ago. Maybe we should give Omarion a break and allow his bulked up body to titillate our senses while he rebuilds his career with the Maybach Music Group camp. You have to admit: his chest is nicer to look at than Rick Ross’ rotund figure
Trey Songz
In 2004, Trey Songz debuted as the sugary sweet, braided boy next door, with his hit song ‘Gotta Make It’ capturing the hearts of girls everywhere. By the time he reemerged in 2009, Trey switched up his entire image. This new Trey was more about sex, unapologetically inserting references to the act in most of his new singles. His lyrics had gotten raunchier and he had no problem baring his upper body to his ever-growing fan base. The crooner had cut his cornrows — and his chest apparently — using any and every opportunity to show it off. We can be sure that on his current Chapter V tour, he’s peeling his clothes off every night to the delight of concertgoers nationwide.
Ginuwine
When Ginuwine came on the scene in 1996, he was rarely seen in a shirt that was ever fully buttoned up. While promoting his ‘Ginuwine… The Bachelor’ LP, the R&B crooner loved to show off his dance moves just as much as his chiseled abs and ever-glistening chest.
As the years passed, G, born Elgin Baylor Lumpkin, got married and added to his brood of eight children. Being a dad, less of his banging body was seen onstage and in videos. With the upcoming collaborative of TGT — comprised of himself, Tyrese and Tank — there may be another chance for fans to see that same ol’ G baring his chest.
Tank
In 2001, Tank released his first album, ‘Force of Nature,’ under Blackground Records, and fans couldn’t deny that the LP was aptly named. The D.C. native, with his superhero body and his near-perfect voice, had his female devotees mesmerized. Tank had the heart-melting lyrics, the talent and the physical appearance to build a long-lasting presence in R&B.
He has a bad body prototype — “bad” meaning “good,” of course — and he seemingly knows it. His album artwork almost always highlights his firm muscles and caramel-colored skin, but true fans of the singer-songwriter should see him live and witness his upper body perfection from a few feet away. Tank loves baring his chest onstage.
Akon
Akon started off on a much smaller platform than the one he’s currently taken over. The singer was unequivocally a staple in both hip-hop and R&B when he debuted with his incarcerated anthem ‘Locked Up’ in 2004, but as time went by, he’s become an international pop star. His body has also become just as famous. The Senegalese-born entrepreneur has bared his firm chest and arms both onstage and in videos, leaving fans in awe of his physical appearance. The ‘Stadium’ creator can rest assured that his sex appeal translates easily — from coast to coast, all over the world.
