Massive Shows, Wild Nights and Crazy Fans: Lady Gaga's Guitarist Tells All.
Lady Gaga is one of the biggest brands in the world. From her virtually sold-out world tour, The Born This Way Ball, to her best-selling perfume, she has truly solidified herself as a pop culture icon. So what exactly is it like to work for the First Lady of Pop? We sat down with her guitarist, Ricky Tillo, just to find out. “She’s f---ing bats—t crazy,” Tillo explains. “She always finds a way to keep us on our toes. Her and [her make-up artist] Tara are always pranking the other people on tour. There’s never a dull moment. She’s always blasting new tracks for us while we’re getting ready backstage, because she says ‘someone needs to f---ing hear them.”
When we asked him if Gaga was really as philanthropic as she portrays, he almost got offended. “Her fans are the most important thing in the world to her. If they weren’t why would she have started The Born This Way Foundation, or the Born Brave Bus? She’s one of the most f---ing genuine people I have ever met. Her ‘Little Monsters’ are the reason that she gets up and gets going in the morning. Well, her fans and [her boyfriend] Taylor.” Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney have never been really open about their relationship. The couple almost never address questions about each other in interviews with detailed answers, so naturally that’s where our interview went. “I’ve only met Taylor once or twice, and he’s almost a polar opposite of [Lady Gaga]. While she’s all loud and in your face, Taylor’s more quiet and reserved. When they say opposites attract, they really do mean it. They’re one of the happiest couples I’ve seen in a while, and that’s something that’s rare in Hollywood.”
Lady Gaga has been teasing her fans about her new release, tentatively titled ARTPOP, for a while. Tillo revealed that he had lent his guitar skills on a few of the 50 songs she’s recorded so far. “ARTPOP is a lot more techno and electronic driven than her previous work, but she hasn’t abandoned her usual sound or message. A lot of the songs still have the same message that Born This Way [the song] had. She feels that those are the type of songs her fans connect to the most. My favorite song that I’ve played on was ‘Tea’. It’s like a mixture of EDM and metal, it’s some f---ing futuristic s--t.” Her fans, and everyone for that matter, have been dying for a new single, unfortunately Tillo couldn’t give us a title. “Last I heard, she was debating between five or six songs, including ‘Tea’, but [her label] didn’t really catch on to them like the tour staff did. Gaga and her label are really trying to make sure they have the right song because there’s a lot of competition in 2013. However, I have no f---ing doubt in my mind that she’ll dominate.”
Lady Gaga will be playing the Staples center tonight and tomorrow. ARTPOP is currently scheduled for release in November.
