Most-Hated Billboard Change?
In recent history, Billboard has implemented many changes to their charting rules that have caused members on ATRL to have meltdowns of epic proportions. Which change do you think is the MOST hated here?
Choices include (but not limited to):
-'Blackout' being blocked in 2007 due to last-minute rule change:
Quote:
In this case, after a surprising last-minute rule change on Tuesday night, her expected #1 debut on next week's Billboard albums chart for her fifth effort, Blackout, will be trumped at the finish line by the Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden. Though Britney was pegged to top the charts with sales of 290,000, according to early SoundScan numbers, a press release issued Tuesday afternoon from Wal-Mart, the exclusive retailer of Eden, revealed that the Eagles' first album in nearly 30 years sold 711,000 copies.
|
-"Part of Me" not counting as the 6th #1 from 'Teenage Dream':
Quote:
Perry and Jackson will remain tied for the most Hot 100 toppers from any album regardless of the performance of any singles from Confection. Should any song released from Confection reach No. 1, it would count as a Hot 100 No. 1 from Confection and not Dream
|
-Billboard changes the genre-specific charts (WANEGBT goes #1 on Country Songs, Diamonds goes #1 on Hip-Hop/R&B Songs, Gangnam Style goes #1 on Rap Songs):
Quote:
Swift, who holds down the top two slots on Hot Country Songs with "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" and "Red." Her new country radio single "Begin Again" jumps 37-10. The pop-crossover No. 1 title ranks at No. 36 on Country Airplay (but also gets points associated with its pop-crossover play) and No. 1 on Country Digital Songs, while "Red" is absent from the Country Airplay list, but ranks No. 2 on Country Digital Songs. "Begin Again" appears at No. 29 on Country Airplay and No. 3 on Country Digital Songs. Rihanna shuffles from No. 66 under the former Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs methodology all the way to No. 1 with "Diamonds," aided by crossover pop airplay of the track as well as strong digital sales (No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs). "Diamonds" also tops the inaugural R&B Songs tally. On Rap Songs, Psy soars 20-1 with his current No. 2 Hot 100 hit "Gangnam Style

-Billboard adds streaming to Hot 100 formula:
Quote:
The Hot 100 formula, in addition to tracking terrestrial radio and digital track sales, will now account for the streaming data that makes up the On-Demand Songs chart, as well as non-demand radio streams from Rhapsody and Slacker. The chart rankings will also measure plays on video request service Akoo and audio on-demand streams from MySpace and Guvera. Yahoo! radio streams and Yahoo! on-demand video plays, which were previously part of the Hot 100 formula, will continue to contribute to the chart's ranking. The streaming data is provided to and processed by Nielsen BDS, which provides music research and monitoring services for the entertainment industry.
|
-Billboard changes pricing policy for albums and digital tracks:
Quote:
Unit sales for Albums priced below $3.49 during their first four weeks of release will not be eligible for inclusion on the Billboard album charts and will not count towards sales data presented by Nielsen SoundScan.
*The rule also applies to reissued titles.
*New Holiday/Seasonal titles must meet the minimum threshold through the final week of the calendar year.
*Unit sales for albums or EPs with 8 or less tracks will not be eligible for charting if the retail price is less than the sum of the tracks on the release, multiplied by $0.39.
*Minimum pricing for a multi-disc album (not a single disc with extra tracks), where the extra disc is audio content, will be $3.49 times the amount of discs being made available.
*For digital-only deluxe editions, any extra content exceeding nine tracks would be considered the equivalent of an extra disc. Each additional 10 tracks thereafter would be the equivalent of an additional disc. Unit sales for Digital Tracks priced below $0.39 during their first three months of release will not be eligible for inclusion on Billboard's digital songs charts
|
Data enhances Hot 100 and other Billboard charts to reflect online video activity
Quote:
The YouTube streaming data is now factored into the chart's ranking, enhancing a formula that includes Nielsen's digital download track sales and physical singles sales; as well as terrestrial radio airplay, on-demand audio streaming, and online radio streaming, also tracked by Nielsen.
Billboard is now incorporating all official videos on YouTube captured by Nielsen's streaming measurement, including Vevo on YouTube, and user-generated clips that utilize authorized audio into the Hot 100 and the Hot 100 formula-based genre charts – Hot Country Songs, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, R&B Songs, Rap Songs, Hot Latin Songs, Hot Rock Songs and Dance/Electronic Songs – to further reflect the divergent platforms for music consumption in today's world.

Most hated for me is not counting only-airplay singles
Classics like Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn" and Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris" would had slay so hard, they deserve so much more
Radio was more real those days, people were more here requesting their favorite songs to radio stations.. But thanks God, they change the rules few years later

I don't get it, what did Billboard change here:
In this case, after a surprising last-minute rule change on Tuesday night, her expected #1 debut on next week's Billboard albums chart for her fifth effort, Blackout, will be trumped at the finish line by the Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden. Though Britney was pegged to top the charts with sales of 290,000, according to early SoundScan numbers, a press release issued Tuesday afternoon from Wal-Mart, the exclusive retailer of Eden, revealed that the Eagles' first album in nearly 30 years sold 711,000 copies. ?
It had sold 711,000 enough more than Britney, what's the deal?

^^ at the time (someone correct me if I am wrong), Billboard didn't count exclusive-only album sales (albums that are only available at one store) into the total until then.

Streaming rule = genre specific.
The other 3 are legitimate; drastic discounts shouldn't count, POM wasn't on Teenage Dream and The Eagles sold more.

Albums exclusively available at a single retailer could not chart

I don't understand why people complain about streaming. IMO streaming makes the chart more accurate

I don't know why people think Blackout got snubbed. It was silly to have a rule excluding single retailer albums. The Eagles sold more than Britney that week. The BB200 should show accurate results of which album sold the most, and of course, Britney's didn't.
My vote goes for the genre related charts. Since they changed it, they should focus more on the genre airplay charts as well.

Part Of Me is the worst of the ones listed.
But the only one that really bothers me that much, is them changing the Hot 100 formula last year so that the impacts of sales was lessened and airplay impact was increased. Streaming is fine, but to change it so that the weight of those two components is different? The chart has been messy ever since.

britney deserved to be snubbed, they sold more than her period.. its fair. streaming is not the problem its airplays dominance in the new formula. even if its shown to be even, airplay is generally bigger and that formula needs to be updated as such. i dislike katy but the part of me snub was clearly to thwart her from MJs record, records are meant to be broken they should've just let it rock.
the genre specific one is totally ****ed, they need to edit it to only count airplay from that specific chart because its not fair. AKA wanegbt topping, i dont mind using its pop sales, but its pop airplay too???

I do agree that changing that rule was a good idea, but atleast change it the week after since they already announced Blackout at number 1.

Katy Perry re-released with a new title, therefore it didn't come from Teenage Dream I don't see what's the big deal about it it's not like BB had changed the rules just to stop her

I agree with the POM rule change. Technically, it was released on a "different" album because it wasn't included on the original in the first place.

we know this.
i just listed all of the billboard changes that have occurred over the past 6-7 years to see which was the most hated, not which was the most fair or the most unjust.
