LOS ANGELES — It's still early in L.A., but with awards to hand out in 108 categories, you can't blame Grammy organizers for wanting to get a jump on things. So while the limos were just starting to curl around the Staples Center, the first awards of the evening (well, afternoon, really) were already being handed out at an untelevised ceremony from the adjacent L.A. Convention Center. While most of the awards tend to border on the, um, obscure (give it up for the Best Classical Crossover Album!), a couple of MTV faves were already competing for some trophies.
Missy Elliott's eye-popping "Lose Control" clip trumped the Gorillaz's "Feel Good Inc." in the Best Short Form Video category, while R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet, Parts 1-5" came up short in the Best Long Form category (losing to the Bob Dylan/ Martin Scorsese collabo "No Direction Home.")
Meanwhile, Shakira's Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 took home the Grammy for Best Latin Rock/ Alternative Album. Oh, and just in case you were wondering, Chuck Ainlay, Mark Knopfler and Bob Ludwig won for Best Surround Sound Album.
CONGRATULATIONS SHAKIRA!!!!!
