The ATRL Interactive Music Xchange 2005 Hullabaloo!
Yeah, I have made a top 50 of 2005 and I can't wait to share it! Rock on
LET'S GET IT STARTED IN HERE!
"This body's left the soul.."

#50 "The Clincher" by Chevelle
Ever since the anger management fested "The Red," I've been a huge fan of Chevelle. And I can't help but argue that lead singer Pete Loeffler has one of the best voices in this business. Last year, Chevelle had a top 20 hit on my end of the year countdown with "Vitamin R," and this year the three boys are back to kick off the 50 of 2005 countdown with "The Clincher." Although majorly underrated by MTV2, the song was a hit on my countdown spending about 35 days in my top 10.

"Will you chew until it bleeds?"
49. "The Hand That Feeds" by Nine Inch Nails
Azeeen so we'll do it again. Brand new stuff by Nine Inch Nails. I love when I play my IPOD and that's how our #49 song starts. Nine Inch Nails (aka the Trent Reznor solo man show) came back from a longggg absence this year and had a huge hit with the #1 smash album "With Teeth." While "The Hand That Feeds" started off strong, it quickly turned blah for me. The video was cool, but that couldn't save it from getting any higher than #49.
"Just like a couple animals"

48. "Animals" by Nickelback
Creed, 3 Doors Down, and Nickelback: the three bands every true rock fan loves to hate. Creed and 3 Doors Down I can agree with, but every now and again, I have my drifting opinions on that third band, Nickelback. Last year, they made a big appearance on my year end countdown with "Feelin Way Too Damn Good." And this year they're back again, and NOT with "Photograph" since I LOATHE that song. But the second single from their latest release is just another "Figured You Out"ish kind of song - full of sexual inuendos. Beyond belief, I like animals. Both dogs and cats, and the Nickelback song. And that's why they're #48.
"I walk a lonely road.."

47. "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day
So far, any end of the year list I've seen this year has had this song in their top 5. In fact, this song was #4 on my 2004 end of the year countdown last year. But going back to the Buggles old saying, "Video (radio) killed the radio star." Don't get me wrong; I love American Idiot and pretty much all of the tracks on it. But being such a big band, Green Day was all over radio this year - and probably all over most people's nerves! Nevertheless, this is one of Green Day's BEST songs, and I genuinely mean it - if they never released it, I would've felt the same. It's 43 spots lower than last year, but don't worry folks - Green Day makes two more appearances on the countdown.

If you don't wanna comment, that's cool. Let's continue..
"Just like the hearse you die to get in again.."
46. "Helena" by My Chemical Romance
Still to this day, I have no clue what the song means. But hands down, the video for "Helena" has one of the coolest scenes this year - the umbrella dance scene, which should have won best choreography at the VMAs may I add. Anyhow, "Helena" dominated both radio and television this year. I remember hearing the song all the way from January until August! The song didn't last that long on my countdown, but still finished at #46 on the year end countdown.
"You've got guts to spill.."
45. "Time to Waste" by Alkaline Trio
What do Mr. Hahn and the Alkaline Trio have in common? Well, duh, he directed their hit video for "Time to Waste." After seeing the video once on Fuse, I immediately fell in love with it and so did my countdown. In the summer, "Time to Waste" fell 11 days short of retirement, but spent 4 days in the pole position. Not too shabby for the trio of guys.
"I walk the streets of Japan till I get lost.."

44. "Doesn't Remind Me" by Audioslave
Remember when Donny and Marie sang about taking a little bit of country and a little bit of rock and roll? Well forward to 2004 and 2005 and talk about taking alot of Rage Against the Machine and a little of Soundgarden, and you get your #44 band, Audioslave. At first, I never thought the band would work. I sure was wrong. Maybe Audioslave is more vulnerable to radio overkill than both the previous bands, but who cares when its good music. "Doesn't Remind Me" retired in mid-September at #7 after spending 45 days in and out of the countdown. On the year end countdown, they fall in at #44 - oddly enough, the same position occupied by their "Show Me How to Live" two years ago.
"No one's getting out of this alive.."

43. "DOA" by the Foo Fighters
To think that Dave Grohl could go from being the drummer for one of the most popular bands of all time to the lead singer of one of today's most popular bands. Even though I feel that Foo Fighters are one of the most underrated rock bands of all time, they still continue to crank out hit after hit, with 2005 being no exception. From "Best of You" (which we'll see later) to "DOA" and their latest hit which is blowing up my charts, "Resolve", the Foo Fighters have been a force this past year. Although DOA didn't "blow up," it managed to spend 45 days on my countdown and retire in October. A job well done, Dave and the boys.
"I'm gonna make somebody love me.."

42. "Do You Want to?" by Franz Ferdinand
Cmon, you know you couldn't get the chorus out of your head. "Well do ya do ya do ya wanna well do ya do ya do ya wanna wanna go?" Franz Ferdinand exploded in America last year (proof by their #16 end of the year charting with "Take Me Out") and came back with the poppy "Do You Want To?" I really don't like how the song begins but once the song gets going, I get going. Franz spent 45 days on the countdown, good enough for the #42 position. Sadly, "This Fire," their other 2005 hit, just missed the cut, pulling in at #56.
"Your favorite fruit is chocolate covered cherries.."
41. "Chariot" by Gavin DeGraw
Don't yell at me! I know Gavin DeGraw isn't usually classified under rock, but in my opinion, he's one of the best solo rockin guys around too. Take away the guitar and give Gavin a piano and you have a hit. After the enormously successful "I Don't Wanna Be" (#8 last year), Gavin knew he had to come back with another hit. And he didn't upset. With a video directed by Scrubs lead Zach Bruff, and starring costar Donald Faison and beauty Jamie King, "Chariot" took over my summer countdown for 33 days, peaking at #3.
And thats it from #50 to #41. But in the next ten, expect:
Avril Lavigne's boy toy
An 80s band who came back to 'reality' this year
and a Canadian band who's on 'fire!'
Thanks and cya tomorrow!

Time to get a little Kasey Kasemish and kick off the top 40!
"Must I always be waiting waiting on youuu.."

40. "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing" by Jack Johnson
In the midst of #41 artist Gavin DeGraw and other artists like Jason Mraz and John Mayer, Jack Johnson stands out. Listen to any album of his, and you'll feel like you're on a Caribbean Island. The CDS have such a mellow, laid-back feel to them that you can't help but fall in love with every track. "Sitting, Waiting, Wishing" combined a clever song with a clever video, propelling the song to #1 3 times on my countdown.
"I did it for us!!"

39. "Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day
Sick of my constant video references? Well, sorry but I'm going to do it again. THIS MIGHT JUST BE THE WORST VIDEO GREEN DAY EVER MADE. With the girl from "Thirteen" and another actor who I don't even know, Green Day made such a stupid video, full of badddd acting. But, THE SONG IS SO GOOD. When the little guitar performance in the middle of the song comes on, wow, I love it. That just might be what made the song stay on the countdown for 45 days and retire at #5. One Green Day song left by the way.
"Good things won't last forever.."

38. "My Eyes Burn" by Matchbook Romance
Folks, you didn't read wrong. My Chemical Romance is not the only "Romance" who hit the charts this year. Yep, Matchbook Romance did too. I'm not really up on the history of these guys, but got introduced to them from a friend about two years back. Thought they were a pretty cool band, and so did my countdown. "My Eyes Burn" spent 42 days on the countdown, 3 days short of retirement. But retirement schmatirement. They still finish at #38 on my year end countdown, even above retired tracks.
"Sing like you think no one's listening.."

37. "Existentialism on Prom Night" by Straylight Run
You would kill for this. And Straylight Run definitely killed for a spot on this countdown in 2005. While I wish my SAT skills were sharper and I knew what "Existentialism" meant, I guess it doesn't really matter. Straylight Run is pretty much in the same category as Matchbook Romance. I know little about them. But what I do know is that "..Prom Night" and its bus-inspired video peaked at #2 on my countdown before retiring in mid-February. And the way things are going now, "Big Shot (Hands in the Sky)" will most likely be on this same chart come December 2006.
"I'm better off on my own.."

36. "Pieces" by Sum 41
Behind 311 and Unwritten Law, Sum 41 is easily my third favorite band. I've liked them since their "Fat Lips" days up until the amazing Chuck. Chuck was a CD with so much potential and I knew it the day that I bought it. The CD with "We're All to Blame" (#2 on my 2004 year end chart), "The Bitter End," and a bunch of other great songs had HIT written all over them. Although none of their singles were 'huge,' "Pieces" was easily the most recognizable. The song stayed on my countdown for all 45 days and retired in the beginning of the year. Don't fret though - Sum 41's run on the year end countdown is not yet complete either.

Existentialism, noun: (philosophy) a 20th-century philosophical movement; assumes that people are entirely free and thus responsible for what they make of themselves
...I knew what it meant before looking it up, honest

Can I get a hell yeah? Let's go on with two more videos
"It ain't pretty!!"

35. "Pretty Vegas" by INXS
If you're an avid 80s fan or were one of the five people who watched Rock Star: INXS (like me), then you know who INXS is. If you don't here's a quick history. INXS was a popular 80s band who shot to fame with the hit "Need You Tonight." For the next decade, the Australian band continued to make great music, until sadly in 1997, when their lead singer Michael Hutchence committed suicide. Fast forward to 2005 when the band decided to look for a new lead singer. In American Idol fashion, 15 hopefuls were eliminated until one final contestant remained: the ever so popular among girls, JD Fortune. Fortune, who proclaimed himself to be on the brink of "having no money," joined the band for their brand new 2005 CD. The first single off the CD "Pretty Vegas" surprisingly did well on my countdown - and is still doing great as it sits at #4. JD may be no Kelly Clarkson, but I think INXS is truly 'back again.'
"Hey you hey you, finally you get it.."

34. "Twisted Transistor" by Korn
I doubted it and many of their fans probably did too. For the last few years, Korn had been on a downfall. Early in the millennium they were all over TRL and radio, yet since "Here to Stay," Korn hadn't really produced anything that media was "OMG"ing over. But it's time to be honest, especially to Johnny. I've downloaded a few tracks from their latest CD, and KORN IS BACK. The song which first grabbed by attention ended up being their first single. It's undeniable that "Twisted Transistor" is a catchy catchy tune, one of Korn's most catchy honestly. And you can't help but love Korn and David Meyers idea of using XZibit, Lil' Jon, David Banner, and Snoop for the video. With the song still on my daily coutndown, Korn could be making another appearance on this same list in 2006.
Just a quick recap for anyone who doesn't feel like reading any of the above ****.
50. "The Clincher" by Chevelle
49. "The Hand That Feeds" by Nine Inch Nails
48. "Animals" by Nickelback

MORE MUSIC YAYYYYY SPECIAL ED
"I woke up with the power out.."

33. "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)" by Arcade Fire
One of the longest tracks on the countdown, yet one of the coolest. I hated "Rebellion" and rode these Canadians off at first. And then I heard this song and kapow boom fireworks went off. To think it only peaked at #4 and spent only 17 (YES a travesty) days on my countdown. By the end of the year, I became once again attached to this song and had to put it so high. If I could describe this song, it'd be so hard. "Power Out" is like a salad bowl, with a mixture of cucumbers and tomatoes and everything.
ALERT! ALERT! For the first time ever, I had to do it...At #32...we have a TIE!
"I can't sit down, I can't stand up cause if I do I know I'm gonna go where the soul meets body.."

32. "Soul Meets Body" by Death Cab For Cutie and "Breakin'" by the Music
Here's the story. With such a great year in music, it was inevitably hard for me to make my top 50 list of 2005. Normally, I could just order my list from 1 to 50 and it's no problem. Some videos would just have to settle for close call range. But after making the official list, I forgot something. THE MUSIC! I loved "Breakin" and when I went back, I refused to knock off any song. Cmon I didn't wanna upset Chevelle! Therefore, you get 2 for the price of 1 at #32. Two different bands. One band from England who kicked in early in the year with "Breakin'" and the cult-classic emo band, Death Cab For Cutie, who hit my chart for 31 days late this year. I don't know, but I think both bands are great and really have the potential to become big. Watch out in 2006.
"The last thing I want to do right now is read your stupid poetry.."

31. "Silhouette Serenade" by Vendetta Red
For once, I might be the only person to include this song on their countdown. In fact, I'm not even sure if most people have ever heard this song. Back in 2003, Vendetta Red released their hit track "Shatterday." Unfortunately, that song sucked, and would never have come close to any of my countdowns. But in 2005, Vendetta released this song, which had BIG written all over it, just as big as their lead singer's hair. I've never been to an opera, but I swear you'll feel like there's an orchestra right behind you when you listen to this song. The melody blends so well and all the instrumental breaks are truly outstanding - outstanding enough to propel the guys to retirement at #12 in late July.
"Oh my God, I can't believe it!"

30. "Oh My God" by the Kaiser Chiefs
OMG! OMG! We're in the top 30! OMG! It's the Kaiser Chiefs! OMG "I Predict A Riot" was so bad that it didn't even come close to the countdown. But the UK band's second single "Oh My God" is such a unique song that I can't stop praising it. I think this is actually 2004 since I saw it on UK Subterranean late in the year, but oh what - it impacted big in 2005. If any song on my countdown could be called odd, this would be the one. That'd probably explain why the song didn't blow up big on American radio. If you're driving to work, and don't want a song stuck in your head, don't even turn "Oh My God" on - it'll be stuck in your head all day. "OMG" spent 45 days on the countdown, 2 in February and the other 43 beginning mid-August. Talk about a long life-span.
OK. Coming up in #29-#20!
- A band who I could never believe hit TRL this year
- A band who used a playground toy in their title
- and a band who's song would most likely be the response of one frustrated chess player to another chess player when that player is sitting and pondering and doing nothing!

All good except for Death Cab, obviously. And yes, i've actually heard SS and I like it too, but not good enough to make my Top 50.
And putting three women above Elisha Cuthbert? That's a crime, man!
