.. and the chance of them recovering was slim to none. You were given the choice to either continue to have them on life support, or you would stop all life support and let nature take its course. What would you do?
If their chances were slim to none then it would be unlikely if they were to survive that they would ever get to lead a normal life anyway so I'd probably have them taken off life support.
Depends on the situation specifics but for the most part if given I would respond in this order.
1. Do what he/she explicitly wanted me to do
2. If option one isn't available, do what I feel he/she would want me to do in the situation
3. If there isn't an exact answer for 1/2 then I would pull the plug.
I would for example pull certain people's plugs because I feel it would be for the best, but would never pull my father's regardless of what was happening because I know in his life he was absolutely and verbally against ending anyone's Life support.
This is all assuming I am actually able to clearly think as I am now when the situation came down to it, but I can't imagine what having this decision on you would really feel like irl.
Pull the plug. I don't see a point in keeping a person alive by having a machine breathe for them and they cannot get up and move or talk or see. And if they were somewhere in there, imagine how awful it would be not being able to move or communicate in any way, all you can do is lay there and think? No thanks. It would be too painful to see them like that, I'd want happy memories of them alive, not lying lifeless in a hospital bed.
If it was me on life support and I had a slim chance of surviving... and even if I did I wouldn't be able to speak or do anything for myself ever again... then I would want someone to pull the plug on my cause I just couldn't live life that way after all these years of being able to do whatever I want... so I would probably do the same thing... Even though it would be really sad, I would think that they would prefer to be at peace rather than having some machine keep them alive
