Lady drinks 17 cups of coffee in 1 day for Starbucks planner

MANILA, Philippines — Stop the race.
After less than a day, a woman from Marikina was the first person to claim the Limited Edition Starbucks 2013 Planner after consuming 17 cups of coffee, 9 of which she didn’t even like.
Rowena Garutayhon, a self-confessed coffee addict was the first Filipino to receive the much sought planner, on the day the promo started. She attributed her competitive nature and crazy addiction to coffee for achieving her feat.
“I wanted to be the first among my friends to have it,” said Rowena excitedly. “I never knew I would be the first in the Philippines!!!”
To redeem the planner, customers must accumulate a total of 17 stickers on their Starbucks Christmas Traditions Promo card. A customer can avail of the card with no purchase required.
Out of the 17 stickers, 9 of the purchases must be a Holiday Feature Beverage whether it is the Toffee Nut Latte, Peppermint Mocha or the Dark Cherry Mocha. A sticker is awarded for each Starbucks handcrafted beverage purchase.
According to Rowena, she went to the nearest Starbucks branch near her house just as the security guard was about the open the store for the day. She then ordered her favorite drink, which was the Mocha Frappuccino. After finishing her first cup and getting a sticker, she then went on to the hardest part.
The 3 Holiday Feature Beverages

“The hardest part was ordering 9 Holiday Feature Beverages, which I really don’t like, but I was able to force them down,” she said.
“The trick was drinking them alternately,” explains Garutayhon. “First you order your favorite drink, then order 1 holiday drink. After that, order another favorite drink to drown out the yucky taste. Repeat until you have in your hand the planner.”
When asked what color of the planner she picked, she answered, “Green of course!”
Rowena didn’t bother to eat breakfast or lunch during her “race”, as it just “confuses the palate”. Another reason was that purchasing pastries and other food items adds up to the total end value of the planner, which would make owning it less prestigious.
“A planner with a perfect leather coating and a corporate logo emblazoned on it is worth the almost two thousand pesos I spent on the drinks, but not another penny more from their pastries,” she said as tears started falling from her eyes.
When asked why, she revealed that the pleasure of her achievement was short-lived after she was diagnosed to having Type 1 Diabetes after she complained of unusual thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger and extreme fatigue and irritability.
Her doctor now advises her to use her newly acquired planner to schedule her daily insulin treatments and her weekly checkups.
“At least now I can use it, unlike previous years where it was left to gather dust after claiming it.”
Drinking 17 different mixes and variations of coffee was a tall order (no pun intended), but Rowena Garutayhon is now the first proud owner of the Limited Edition Starbucks 2013 Planner.
At the end of the promo, she would be joined by an estimated 367,000 Filipinos who would also have the said planner.
