For example you're walking somewhere, and you see someone you kinda know, but not enough to have a conversation right there. So you want to say hello, but fear looking stupid when the person doesn't say hello back. I always take out my phone and text someone, so I don't have to give them eye contact and say hello.

When I'm walking by a person, I have no time for that. So its usually a nod or smile.
