voters have approved a Republican-
backed measure that wipes out all
affirmative action programs in state
government hiring, education and
contracting practices.

Voters approved the new constitutional
amendment Tuesday despite
opponents, who claimed there already
was a prohibition on racial or gender
quotas in state government.
The GOP-controlled Legislature voted in
2011 to send the proposal to a vote of
the people. It did so over the objection
of Democrats who maintained it was
designed only to stoke racial tensions
and drive conservative voters to the
polls.

The Republican sponsors of the bill
disputed that claim. They say the
amendment's purpose is to help the
state get past racism by showing that a
person's qualifications are more
important than skin color.

Honestly, this is one of the few things in which the conservatives are actually more forward-thinking than the liberals.

Affirmative Action is a tired ass policy created in the 60's by liberal whites who felt guilty for discriminating minorities in the past. It is used mostly in higher education and gives colleges the right to use race or sex as a qualifier for acceptance. Basically, schools want to promote diversity, so in order to do so, with Affirmative Action, they are legally able to accept students of a minority group with lower qualifications over a majority student holding higher qualifications if they feel the need to. For school admissions that operate under Affirmative Action, they consider being a minority a "plus" in your favor.

I get the purpose behind it in the 60's, but basically all it says now is that we are nothing more than a few spots of color to be painted on a college's white canvas. I say this as a black male, but anyone of color who is in favor of Affirmative Action is really just diminishing their own self-worth. My pigment should not have any factor on my admission to a college. Look at my GPA, test scores, and extracurriculars - not my skin. If want people to not hold our color against us, we can't want them to use our color to judge us in any form, good or bad.

The fact that this is constitutional in any state is pretty sickening, tbh. The whole purpose behind this tired ass policy is discrimination, yet that's exactly what it does.

I don't know, in theory affirmative action is a bad thing but sometimes it's necessary to take power away from racist employers and deans.

Not that I agree with affirmative action or whatever, I don't know anything about it but I wish rich white republicans would stop claiming racism/that they're discriminated against.

And the government should take action to stop the discrimination from them - not emposing a policy to do reverse discrimination. If a white person is more qualified than me for a job or spot at a school, why should I be given it to him because I'm black?And then where do I fall amongst other minorities groups. I'm above my Hispanic brethren but below my Asian sisters? The thought that these institutions have this kind of check list and quota for minorities groups in their establishments is disgusting. Affirmative Action makes us numbers, not people.


And that begs the question. Why is my minority status of race more qualifying for a job or school than my sexuality is? It's an out-dated law that needs to go.

!! Nobody discriminates them. I usually only see rich white teenagers or old rich white men complaining about them getting discriminated against by black people.

And the other discouraging part is how Oklahoma really isn't the most open-minded state in the union (far from it,tbh) and given the nature of some of its residents,This could possibly have a chance of opening a can of worms.

I would also like to point out that Oklahoma has a fairly large Native American population (almost 9% of total population).

Nothing to be proud of. And anyone saying AA isn't fair, the people (minorities, and woman) are just as qualified in the situation where the decision is being made. They don't pick someone who isn't as qualified over a white or Asian person. It is just in place to ensure that there is DIVERSITY. We've had this discussion in my class over the past couple weeks. I'm white so I can't really hold an opinion on this and I respect yours. But the last sentence is idealist. People are still racist and minorities still DO get judged (negatively) and/or lose opportunities because of their color. The conservatives that try to wipe AA always push this fairytale idea that racism doesn't happen and everyone has the same access to higher education and jobs. Yes, it's a dated bill, but something like it still has reason to exist.

On a case-to-case basis, no one should lose their place in any institution to a less qualified person due to their skin color/religion/sexual orientation alone. This is a good thing.
