News: Bombs found on Vancouver Skytrain stations and tracks

METRO VANCOUVER – A TransLink attendant at the Metrotown SkyTrain Station in Burnaby found another suspicious device roughly six hours after a makeshift bomb was discovered on the tracks in Surrey.

As of 10 p.m. Friday night an RCMP bomb disposal unit was still trying to determine whether the device, found outside the east entrance just after 8 p.m., was dangerous. Early indications are that it “doesn’t look anything like” the makeshift explosive found in Surrey, according to Transit Police.

“A short while ago something suspicious was found during one of our site inspections,” Transit Police spokeswoman Anne Drennan said of the Burnaby case at 8:20 p.m.

“We’re being hyper vigilant,” Drennan said. Noting that police jurisdictions along all SkyTrain lines are on high alert and officers are looking for suspicious activity near the transit hubs.

TransLink planned to continue SkyTrain service without stopping at Metrotown Station until the item was fully examined Drennan said. In the meantime shuttle buses were transferring people between Patterson, Metrotown and Royal Oak SkyTrain stations.

The object was “slightly hidden” up against a concrete wall near the station entrance and was found as sweeps of all stations were occurring after an explosive device was found earlier in the day.

Around 2 p.m. Friday, Surrey RCMP’s explosives unit was dispatched to a section of the Expo Line, after a passenger reported seeing a suspicious red canister on the line midway between the Scott Road and Gateway stations.

When the unit arrived, they found three cylinders strapped together with a small red canister, with straps and wires sticking out of it, attached to the bundle.

“When you looked down on the device you could see what appeared to be some sort of red canister; it looked like possibly a fire extinguisher or an oxygen tank,” Drennan said.

The unit removed the entire contraption in an explosive safe container and will dismantle it, keeping the canisters for forensic testing and evidence, Drennan said. The device itself will be blown up for safety reasons.

There are no suspects at this point in what was the first explosive device ever found on TransLink property Drennan said.

“We have no idea how the device was placed there; it is possible physically for it to have been thrown up on the track but we don’t know that what happened and we don’t know how long it was there,” Drennan said. “We asking anybody who had seen anything suspicious to give Transit police a call.”

The discovery led TransLink to stopping running trains between Scott Road and Gateway stations, with a bus bridge running between the two stations, until 5:30 p.m.

Tell me about it. One time this homeless dude tried to give me an expired Skytrain ticket and tried to take my money by force. I had to literally wrestle his arms off of me and threatened to call the police.

Muggings, gang violence, beggars and the like are so frequent there.

Its odd considering how busy it is though, and I mean its right by a mall

Hollywood.

The amount of times people tried to sell me drugs/used transit tickets at Metrotown station. So sketchy.

Glad nobody was hurt though. Thats scary.
