Lady Gaga upstaging everyone at the 2010 VMAs had nothing to do with the eight awards that she took home during the evening - it was thanks to her appearance halfway through the evening in an outfit made entirely out of raw beef. The meat dress, as it’s now commonly known, came with a matching fascinator and boots - all created by Argentinian designer Franc Fernandez and styled by Nicola Formichetti. The designer revealed that the meat – which was from his local butcher – had to be constantly refrigerated while he worked on the design to keep it fresh. Gaga was then stitched into the creation backstage at the event. The dress has since been dried and preserved by taxidermists and is on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Ohio, US. At the time, the singer was quoted as saying: “If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones. And I am not a piece of meat.”
