Romney LIED in court : ‘October Surprise’ TOMORROW
Quote:

We haven't heard back from the Romney campaign office -- however Mitt's attorney was quoted about the Stemberg divorce in Time magazine, saying ... “This is a decades-old divorce case in which Mitt Romney provided testimony as to the value of a company. He has no objection to letting the public see that testimony.”
Mitt Romney LIED under oath when he testified in the divorce of his good friend and screwed the friend's wife out of a lot of money in the process ... so claims the ex-wife of Staples' founder TomStemberg.
Multiple sources connected with the divorce tell TMZ ... during Tom's uber nasty divorce case with ex-wife Maureen, Mitt Romney gave a deposition and testified during the trial that Staples was worth virtually nothing. Romney testified that the company was worth very little and Tom was a dreamer and "the dream continues."
Romney characterized the Staples stock as "overvalued," adding, "I didn't place a great deal of credibility in the forecast of the company's future."
Partly as a result of Romney's testimony, Maureen got relatively little in the divorce, but we're told just weeks after the divorce ended, Romney and Tom went to Goldman Sachs and cashed in THEIR stock for a fortune. Short story -- Romney allegedly lied to help his friend and screw the friend's wife over.
And there's more ... Our sources say years later, Maureen, who suffered from MS and had multiple bouts with cancer, got a visit from one of Tom's guys, who gave her papers informing her that Tom was cancelling her health insurance. Our sources say the irony here is that we're told Tom was working as one of then Governor Mitt Romney's chief health care advisers.
Sources tell us ... Tom also got custody of the couple's one child, making allegations of abuse against Maureen. And get this ... in the mid-90s, after the divorce, Tom sent the boy a letter saying, although he loved him, because of issues related to the divorce "it will not be possible for you to be a part of our family for the foreseeable future."
Maureen lost her home in the process and struggled financially.

Court Battle Over His Involvement in Bitter Divorce

EXCLUSIVE
6:45AM PT Gloria Allred is in court in Boston and she is representing Maureen Sullivan Stemberg (below). We just got the details about Romney's testimony in the Stemberg divorce. Click here to read it.
7:30AM PT The court hearing where the Boston Globe is asking a judge to unseal Stemberg divorce documents -- including Romney's testimony -- has been continued until Thursday morning. We're waiting to see if Allred comments on the case.
8:05AM PT Gloria and Maureen walked out of court. They did not comment.
Mitt Romney was heavily involved in the extremely messy divorce of one of his key supporters ... and the Boston Globe is going to court first thing Wednesday morning in an attempt to unseal the court file as well as lift a gag order ... TMZ has learned.
The divorce was between Staples co-founder Tom Stemberg and his first wife Maureen. We're told the divorce battle lasted for years and was extremely ugly.
Sources tell us Romney gave both a deposition in the divorce and testified in the trial. According to our sources, the Boston Globe got a tip that there was "juicy information about Romney" in the sealed documents.
Romney, Stemberg and Maureen were all served papers by the Globe notifying them that the paper was trying to unseal the case and lift the gag order enforced on all parties.
According to an article in the Boston Globe in 2005, Maureen received nearly 500,000 shares of Staples stock in the divorce ... but sold half her shares before the company went public.
Stemberg and Romney's business ties go deep. Bain Capital helped launch Staples ... widely seen as the first big success for Romney's venture capital company -- and Romney sat on Staples' board of directors for many years.
Our sources say Tom has filed papers opposing the Globe's motion. Romney's lawyers have not responded.
Tom has been a major Romney supporter, even speaking for five minutes at the Republican National Convention.
We're told Gloria Allred represents someone connected with the divorce and we believe -- though we have not confirmed it -- that is Maureen.
If the gag order is lifted, Maureen and others could freely talk about the divorce ... less than two weeks before the election.

A judge in the Boston area has delayed by one day a hearing involving famed civil rights attorney Gloria Allred, who is seeking to have the court unseal testimony given by presidential candidate Mitt Romney in a contentious divorce case involving his good friend, the former CEO of Staples, Tom Stemberg. The hearing is now scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m. EST.
The decision to delay the hearing came after Allred arrived at court Wednesday morning with Stemberg’s former wife who intended to tell the judge that she does not object to unsealing testimony given by Romney in her divorce case.

As RadarOnline.com has previously reported, Allred's so called ‘October Surprise’ for Governor Romney involves allegations about a child custody matter that the Republican presidential hopeful testified about involving Stemberg and his divorce form one of his two ex-wives.
The founder of Staples, who spoke on behalf of Romney at the Republican National Convention in Tampa Bay, Florida last summer, has four sons from two different ex-wives, Maureen Sullivan Stemberg and Dola Hamilton Stemburg. Mitt Romney's hedge fund, Bain Capital, was an early investor of Staples. Tom Stemberg's sons are in their mid-teens and early twenties.

"Governor Mitt Romney gave sworn testimony about his observations of Tom's role as a father to his four sons," a source close to the situation told RadarOnline.com. Our source wouldn't provide any additional information because of Governor Romney's sworn declaration and gag order.
Stemberg's first wife, Maureen, had a documentary, The Maureen Sullivan Stemberg Story: A Portrait in Courage, which aired on Lifetime. According to a 2008 press release, "Maureen Sullivan Stemberg will provide an in-depth account in this first-time tell all tale of the interweaving relationships and strange bedfellow that business has made in her life. Such luminaries include former Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney - who was the former Republican nominee in the 2008 Presidential campaign, as well as one of the first major investors for Staples while he was employed by Bain Capital, Boston, MA. This story will include the injustice of the Mass. Probate Justice system. Other heavy hitting names have yet to be released in this as of yet untold story including Dola Davis Hamilton Stemberg."

Tom Stemberg's divorce attorney, Joel Kozel was expected to be at the family law courthouse in the Boston area on Wednesday morning as the Boston Globe petitions to have the court records unsealed.
As RadarOnline.com was the first to report exclusivel, the Boston Globe will be in court for an emergency hearing "in an attempt to obtain a court order to unseal the sworn testimony given by Mitt Romney in a prior court case and to lift a gag order so that the parties can speak about Romney. Gloria Allred will be in court representing one of the parties in the case," a source close to the situation previously told us.

"Ms. Allred's client feels that the public needs to know about Governor Mitt Romney's role in this very important case. Governor Romney is running for President of the United States and this goes to a very important character issues," the insider revealed. It's unclear if Governor Romney will have lawyers present at the hearing on Wednesday morning.
The emergency hearing -- now scheduled for Thursday -- will take place at the Norfolk Probate & Family Court in Canton, Massachusetts, and Justice Jennifer Ulwick will oversee the proceedings which will begin at 9 a.m. EST.

Stemberg founded Staples and was the CEO for 16 years. According to the Huffington Post, "Bain Capital, the private equity firm that Romney helped found, was one of the early investors in Staples, and the former Massachusetts governor remained on the retailer's board for more than a decade. In claiming he helped create some 100,000 jobs in the private sector over the years, the Romney campaign has leaned heavily on the success of the office supplier, citing roughly 90,000 Staples jobs in their math."
Romney's pal was featured at the RNC last summer and addressed the delegates and said, "He (Mitt Romney) never looked at Staples as merely a financial investment. He saw the engine of prosperity it could become. Today Staples employs nearly 90,000 people. It has over 2,000 stores, over 50 distribution centers, and it is part of a competitive industry that helps entrepreneurs and small businesses get started on their own. You have to ask yourself, why would an administration that can't create any jobs demonize someone who did?"
PHOTOS: Stars Who Look Like Other Stars
According to a report from the National Employment Law Project Action Fund, Staples is one of the lowest wage employers in the country.
During a interview with PBS' Frontline earlier this year Stemberg said the first time he met Romney, "when you first walked in and saw Mitt, he looked like a guy who ought to be president of the United States. This guy, he looked perfect; he dressed perfect; he spoke perfectly. He asked the most poignant questions in a very, very nice way and didn't make you feel defensive and really drew the best or worst out of you. He was just really, really good."
Stemberg also said that Mitt Romney was no shrinking violet and wasn't concerned about his friend entering politics when he decided to run for governor of Massachusetts. "Nobody pushes Mitt Romney around. Having said that, if there's one person whom he will almost always defer to, it's Ann Romney," Stemberg told PBS.

Most polls indicate that the presidential race between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney is a statistical dead heat.
Gloria Allred, Tom Stemberg, and representatives for Governor Mitt Romney didn't immediately respond to request for comment on this story.
