Confirmation: iTunes is based on rolling 24 hour sales
Overall singles sales are up 6.24% week-on-week at 3,431,449 - 8.77% above same week 2011 sales of 3,154,889.
1 Rihanna 105,953
2 PSY 87,430 (238,982)
3 One Direction 87,008
4 Adele 84,010
5 Ellie Goulding 49,680
6 The Script/will.i.am 41,822 (311,683)
7 Flo Rida 34,231 (168,315)
8 David Guetta/Sia 31,158 (111,146)
9 Conor Maynard/Ne-Yo 30,611
10 Taylor Swift 30,306 (235,156)
11 Jason Mraz 24,925
12 Ne-Yo 23,210 (239,821)
Not released until Friday, Adele's Skyfall instantly becomes her fifth Top 10 hit. Debuting at number four (84,010 sales), the song is the theme to the upcoming James Bond film of the same name, and is the 12th of 22 official Bond themes to make the Top 10. Its debut not only comes on two days sales but also three weeks ahead of the film. The last Bond theme - Alicia Keys and Jack White's Another Way To Die from Quantum Of Solace - was also released ahead of the movie, and picked up enormously once it was in cinemas, hence its unorthodox 26-26-26-27-18-10-9 progression to its chart peak. It has continued to tick over ever since, and finally achieved its 200,000th sale last week. At its peak, incidentally, Skyfalling was number one on iTunes - based on rolling 24 hour sales - in 54 of the 61 countries in which Apple sells downloads- though by the time this piece was written on Sunday afternoon, it had eased to a 'mere' 41, while placing Top 10 everywhere except Nicaragua (number 17) and Bolivia (number 102). Adele seems particularly hot in Chile, where Skyfall, Someone Like You, Rolling In The Deep and Set Fire To The Rain are placed one, three, four and six, respectively.

it means what you are seeing on itunes is the ratio of songs's sales during the last 24 hours.
For example:
Adele 100
Rihanna 50
it means during last 24 hours, Adele sold double Rihanna.

Let's imagine a song gets released on iTunes and in the first minute it sells 1 M copies. It immediately climbs to number one on iTunes chart. Then for some reason for another 23 hours and 59 minutes NO ONE downloads the song. The song is still number one on iTunes during this time cos it sold so much in the first minute. But then, after another minute, the song immediately falls off iTunes chart, because the "big minute" is already one day old - it rolled.
That means when the song is released on iTunes, it is only climbing and it's peak is when it's exactly one day old. It can fall a spot, only if some other song is climbing even faster.
Not sure if u understand

rolling 24 hours = the sales over 24 hours period.
Example: Taylor Swift new song just released and sold 30,000 in the first 3 hours.
How many been sold in the last 24 hours? 30,000 because it sold 0 from hour 0 to hour 21 (but it sold 30,000 from hour 22-24).
Adele sold 40,000 in the last 24 hours.
The popularity bar would show the corresponding of
Adele: 40,000
Taylor Swift: 30,000

It will be rolling....it will only count the sales from the last 24 hours only. Look at the Mediabase Airplay Chart and the rolling 7 days and the HUGE DROP OFF for artists with radio deal or huge first day on the 8th day.
Crude example:
15 mil AI on first day + 2 mil each day for the next 6 days = 27 mil AI total
on the 8th day, that first day huge AI is now gone, it would be
2 mil x 7 days = 14 mil AI
a drop of 13 mil AI due to the 7 days rolling effect. Itunes has a 1 day rolling effect.

That's why when some songs are completely removed, it takes time for them to fall off the chart completely.
Now I understand

I thought everyone already knew this. I also think they give more weight to the most recent hours, because else there's no way to explain the patterns some songs have of falling during the night and climbing during the day (or the other way around).

yeah this is kinda obvious, it couldn't have been based on the popularity of a song at any given moment in time. the only way to chart it fairly would be to do this i guess.

well, in South Korea, it's done on an hourly basis for the popular online sellers.
They have Real-Time Chart (hourly)
Daily Chart (daily)
Weekly Chart (weekly)
Example: Epik High "It's Cold" just released 2 hours ago. About 1 hour and 10 minutes later when melon updated, it appeared on the Real-Time chart at #1.
http://www.melon.com/cds/chart/web/c...m?MAIN=MAIN_TO
.melon.com/cds/chart/web/ chartrealtime_list.htm?MAIN=MAIN_TO
Melon is South Korea version of Itunes with about 60% marketshare.
the song is amazing by the way!

if Itunes have a "real-time" chart with graph like Melon, ATRL will explode!
