Updated, 6:07 p.m. | The Staten Island borough president, James P. Molinaro, waded hip-deep into the culture wars this week, calling Lady Gaga a “****” as he excoriated her for “glorifying drug use.”

Mr. Molinaro made his remarks on Monday at the kickoff of an anti-drug-abuse program.

The Staten Island Advance reported that Mr. Molinaro displayed a poster of Lady Gaga, a 26-year-old native of the Upper West Side, smoking marijuana onstage in Amsterdam last week and told his audience:

"We have to understand that there’s a tremendous influence with our youth, which I didn’t have as a youth. And there’s the influence right there. Stop glorifying the drug use. There’s Gaga. Here’s this … this … I would call her a ****. This **** is influencing many, many children."

Mr. Molinaro, 81, said by telephone Tuesday evening that he intended the word not to indicate that Lady Gaga was promiscuous but to indicate that she behaved inappropriately.

“Looking up the word ‘****’ to see if it was properly used before I used it, it said ‘improper conduct,’” he said, referring to an entry in a Random House dictionary.

“Now, isn’t it improper for someone who is so high profile to be smoking reefer in front of children? I have grandnieces that idolize her – 12 and 13 years old – and it’s ridiculous. You see these young girls walking around on Halloween with her outfit on.”

Drug abuse is a deeply personal subject for Mr. Molinaro: he lost a son to an overdose in 2006. “I remember many days my son crying in my arms — ‘Help me,’” he told the audience on Monday, stressing the urgency of alerting parents to the dangers of drugs.

Lady Gaga’s publicist did not immediately respond to a request for comment from her.

Lady Gaga has no influence over anyone, neither does anyone else that is famous. I'm 18 and I haven't touched weed. Just because my fave, hell even most of the people I know do it, doesn't mean I will. It's their own choice.

There are people who are more gullible and will do things their favorite celebrities do. Even Rihanna who doesn't aspire to be a role model is still considered a role model. That said, there was a very strong likelyhood that people wouldn't have found out if the media didn't report on this isolated case in a country where it's legal. It's silly though, I think people who do things their favorite celebs do have bigger issues to worry about.

Then there's the fact that weed is quite possibly the safest drug, even safer than things like alcohol and prescription pills, which is what the borough president's son overdosed on.

That's the worst part of it all.

He tried to excuse it by saying he's using a definition of the word that hasn't been used since the 1500's.

I was reading some of the comments and people who aren't even fans of Gaga are saying that he's disgusting for using such a word against a woman for something completely irrelevant.

!!!! He's allowed to have an opinion on her drug use (even though it was only marijuana and there are much worse legal substances available) but who does he think he is, judging her and calling her a ****??
