Critics Praise "Red Hot" Rihanna Performance
The Daily Beast
Quote:
It’s fitting that Rihanna—who later bagged the evening’s biggest prize, Video of the Year, for “We Found Love”—kicked off the Video Music Awards seated in the second-most-imposing throne in television history. With what is surely the most groin-centric performance ever given by anyone-not-Michael-Jackson, Rihanna delivered the first of many buzzworthy moments in a night ruled by powerhouse performances.

Taking to the stage in a fiery ensemble, Rihanna got the audience up out of their seats with the Bangladesh produced track taken from her album Talk That Talk. Helping Rihanna to give a performance to remember, American rapper and music director A$AP Rocky, real name Rakim Mayers, jumped on stage to deliver his verse which features on the remix of her red hot mid-tempo single.

Rihanna is one of the sexiest women in the world, and she proved her dominance in the music industry with a showstopping performance at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. The scorching singer opened the show with a performance of ‘Cockiness (Love It)’ and ‘We Found Love’ with some special guests — and she was incredible! Her super-erotic dancing was NUTS!

it's the opening number by none other than Rihanna. She's singing 'Cockiness' and sporting her new pixie cut and just looking plain fierce because, hello, she's Rihanna! Not too fond of the weird red outfit choice, but Rihanna can do no wrong. Also, MTV sees fit to censor the word 'suck'. Rihanna pushes down into the crowd and is immediately swallowed up by a group of fans who all reach out to touch her. This part is shot from above as otherwise, it wouldn't really work. Giant white balloons are dropped from the sky as the song continues and to be honest, I'm wondering why they didn't save this for last. Ah well, what an opener!.

No one can WERK it like she can!
For the opening act of the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, Rihannaand her freshly-cropped haircut took to the stage to croon her new single from Talk That Talk, Cockiness (Love It)!
But despite an appearance from A$AP Rocky and some pretty fierce, albeit lewd dance moves, the performance didn't really take off until she segued into her smash hit We Found Love with DJ Calvin Harris…and threw herself into the audience!
Ch-ch-check it all out go down (above)!
Hellz YES!
We don't envy the performers who have to come on after her!
This going to be one TOUGH act to follow!

Rihanna kicked off the 2012 VMAs with all the necessary elements of a killer Rihanna performance: A fresh look (red chiffon! head wraps!), rapid-fire choreography (crotch pats!), and no shortage of phallic imagery (we all know what the snakes stand for, RiRi). ''Cockiness'' was just a throbbing, slinky set-up for ''We Found Love,'' which saw Rihanna storm into the crowd and surf across Calvin Harris' pulsing groove. Even A$AP Rocky tricked out as a baseball umpire from the future couldn't derail the balloon-drop finale. B

Rihanna is one of the few entertainers who can arrive at the MTV Video Music Awardslooking flawless and then kick off the show effortlessly. While some fans suggested Thursday belonged to One Direction, Rihanna might beg to differ as she took home the biggest prize of the evening and set the tone for the show. Plus she got big compliments from Lady Gaga reminding the fans how tough it is to start the show.
While some entertainers make segments looked forced, Rihanna has a gift at making her music look fun. Singing, dancing and looking sexy, Rihanna had the whole package as she gave the fans a performance to remember. That’s probably why Lady Gaga took a moment to share her thoughts on the show.

Singer Rihanna brought the sex and sizzle to the MTV Video Music Awards with her opening performance of “Cockiness” and “We Found Love.” She treated the crowd, including Chris Brown and Drake, to some scintillating dance moves. Wearing a sheer red outfit, the 24-year-old launched into a racy rendition of “Cockiness” with help from ASAP Rocky. Rihanna and the rapper even shared a kiss onstage. Next, she partnered up with Calvin Harris for “We Found Love.” When she jumped into the audience, the crowd went wild, waving their hands and singing along.

After stunning the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards red carpet with her newly cut hairdo and a striking snow white gown, Rihanna continued to stun with her performance to open the big show.
Looking as red hot as ever, RiRi started off her performance with her latest single “Cockiness (I Love It).” The performance got some added flare when Rihanna took off her glasses, gave a seductive wink and welcomed rapper A$AP Rocky on stage to perform his verse from the remix. The two showed off some hot chemistry, even sharing a quick kiss while A$AP got a little handful of the pop princess’ behind.

Rising from the underground, Rihanna emerged atop a golden throne ready to assume her position as the night’s resident badass. Along with new pal A$AP Rocky she took on the responsibility of officially welcoming us to the 2012 VMAs with a song that’s all about sucking and eating, even if more than a few key lyrics ended up getting bleeped out. Hey! No one said this was a family show! From her sophisticated slouch—legs spread wide for all to see—to her sneakers making all that suggestive choreography and exaggerated gesturing even easier, Rihanna continues to promote herself as the epitome of unattainable, until A$AP joined her on stage to flirt and play and grab a big ole piece of her behind. We’ve seen this from him before, and we can probably all learn something from his proactive nature. If the opportunity comes your way you might as well seize it, right?
More enjoyable than any rehearsed sexual tension was Rihanna’s risk-averse decision to enter the crowd without an escort or the fear of losing a weave—it helps that she chopped off her hair—on “We Found Love.” Her willingness to be one with the people wasn’t complete until she returned to the stage ready to sing the song an entire step below the original recording. Soon white balloons fell from the majestic Staples Center sky, hands were thrown all over the place and even professional social coordinator Calvin Harris could’t stop smiling. Who needs an award show? We’re ready to party.

Starting off sitting on a makeshift throne, the Bajan singer set things off with a performance of her new"Cockiness (Remix)" single, featuring A$AP Rocky. Rihanna looked stunning, sporting a red outfit and her new pixie haircut that had the Internet going nuts.

Either they were watching an entirely different performance, or they were all paid by Rihanna's team to save face.
And WTF are her and Katy doing to each other?

Loves it The performance isn't actually that bad, the WFL segment was arranged badly but Cockiness was decent.

It's a shame the media has such low standards lately. You'd think after Bey, Gaga, and Adele, they'd come to expect more out of performances.

!!!!!!!!
I think if she performed WFL normally instead of walking around in the crowd and having tons of balloons covering her it would have been much better.

This, the WFL part got pretty messy and distracting, I wish they left the balls out.
I did like the Cockiness part, and she only sang like a couple of lines. I think the critics are giving her a bit too much credit.

It was a great performance by comparison to the others. On a regular night with Bey, Gaga, Britney (ignoring her unfortunate incident the last time she performed), and Adele, it's nothing more than good. She did nothing to push any envelopes and nothing technically awesome on a visual or performance level.

I agree, the performance was pretty good. It was more of a closing performance, but It was a good performance. I had fun watching it and loved her dancing and her vocals at the end of WFL.

This.
That performance wasn't her worst, but to be the opening act?
It's like they'll settle for anything nowadays.

Now u mention this I was watching the performance and kinda surprised at points, her voice sounded kinda different than usual, much more mature I loved it Even tho the vocals were all over the place at times u can tell she is growing vocally, she just needs a few more lessons with her breathing.
