Both. You can be in love with someone while keeping your friends. It's hard to live without one of the two. Being single is fun on the first few months but it gets lonely eventually even with a lot of friends.
Friendship. It's less fragile/volatile then a relationship. Relationships break up more often then friendships do. And you're not as worried about impressing your friends like you would a partner and you're not as worried they might leave you.
