Is there still hope for 2012 to be an iconic year?
It's been agreed by MANY ATRLers that 2012 was just another "flop on by" year...

But with a Q4 coming our way, is there still hope that 2012 can go out with a BANG!

Since the VMAs has been surrounded with hype & 2012 has been filled with comebacks (and more to come!)

Can 2012 still blow us all away with new music?!?!

If so: who, when, how and why!

If not: why?

SPILL THE TEA GURLS!!!

"We Are Young," "Somebody That I Used To Know" and "Call Me Maybe" happened. Where were you?

2012 has been a great year for music, just not for the main pop girls though.

No. And the hits mentioned above are not iconic.

Well... Do those have impact like "Beautiful" or "Bad Romance"... I don't think so... People forget so much about the meaning and iconicness of music... They just focus on charts and sales nowadays... But "STIUTK" was a pretty good hit. But let's face it... Does "Call Me Maybe" have a powerful meaning like "Express Yourself".... I don't think so

Call Me Maybe will be iconic, anyone who believes otherwise is underestimating the simplicity/catchiness of the line "Here's my number so call me maybe". IT will be used for at least the next 5 years at bars and at clubs and the song will continue to be played. Somebody That I Used to Know and We Are Young were global smashes that top the cake for the rest of the year. Nothing else was really all that memorable, Nicki Minaj's PF:RR Backlash might count.

The meaning of this "iconicness" has already been deteriorated on this site. Nevertheless, all those songs transcend just the charts, especially "Call Me Maybe". Comparing them doesn't really eliminate the huge impact they made this year. You'll need to change the topic's concept if you want to bring in meaningfulness or messages, etc. These were all major hits that will be remembered for quite some time.

personally i loved 2012 for music. sure, not as much as i loved say 2003, 2004 and 2009, years that i just simply found to have so much awesome mainstream songs, but there are still a lot of mainstream songs and artists this year i found to be really good like Gotye, Fun, Rihanna, Ellie Goulding and so on. the year wasn't a complete loss, it's just that this year felt a little slower as far generating the buzz for these songs, at least in my opinion. it's not like 2011 and 2010, with an overload of all these big name artists releasing like considerably bland material and people's desperate searches for newer-ish and dynamic songs and it just made those years one huge mess. 2012 feels like it has more flow in people's taste in music. and the #1s are actually awesome this year too.

i disagree. 2010 was an ugly aftermath of 2009 that totally didn't live up to the previous year's expectations and 2011 just lacked so much in a real interest factor, even in Lady Gaga's music. and i am a monster saying this. 2011 was so bland, and such a mess of genres as if people were like "ooh i like this one! never mind i like this one"

It's been a great year so far, because of Adam Lambert, Usher, Frank Ocean, and Nicki, and it'll only get better when Ke$ha releases her second album.

It's been a great year for Indie.
For pop, no it's not. It's horrible and basic.

This. None of the pop releases this year have done much for me. We still have the rest of the year though, some good pop must come around, right?
