Six songs fell short of the cigar in their attempt to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 last year:
--
Justin Bieber, "Boyfriend"
with the announced news of selling 521,000 copies in its opening sales week, it was a sure bet that he would snag the #1; however, fun.'s massive airplay, sales, and streaming numbers shockingly blocked Bieber's lead single from 'Believe.'
--
Maroon 5 f/ Wiz Khalifa, "Payphone"
with an impressive run in the top 3, Payphone stayed parked at #2 for weeks behind two massive #1 hits of 2012 - "Somebody That I Used To Know" and "Call Me Maybe." The song went #1 virtually on all other charts (Digital Songs, Radio Songs, Pop Songs, Adult Pop Songs) except the Hot 100.
--
Katy Perry, "Wide Awake"
what looked to be Perry's 8th #1 single, she began to peak in digital sales and streaming points. It ultimately was blocked by "Call Me Maybe."
--
Ellie Goulding, "Lights"
The definition of a sleeper hit. "Lights" began to rise steadily on the Hot 100. As soon as this song peaked at #2, it began to lose points in sales and airplay (while remaining steady on streaming). Unfortunately, this song was blocked by two songs -- "Call Me Maybe" and the newly-crowned #1 "Whistle."
--
PSY, "Gangnam Style""
Arguably one of the most frustrating blocks of 2012. PSY's novelty hit became lodged at #2 for seven consecutive weeks behind
the payola-driven Maroon 5's "One More Night."
--
Ke$ha, "Die Young"
K$'s block was due to Rihanna leapfrogging over her in the Hot 100 and snatching the #1 spot for 3 weeks. "Diamonds" blocked "Die Young," where it remained for 2 consecutive weeks.
