It's an absolute masterpiece. I don't think it is one of the most controversial movies of all time though. There have been A LOT of very controversial movies and Brokeback Mountain was lauded and acclaimed more than vilified, even if it did have some controversy surrounding it.

Probably, but it is also one of the most praised movies of all time. Career defining for the lead cast.
