MTV: Best New Artists of 2012... So Far

There's been a ton of great artists that have come out so far this year, but we at MTV News decided to set out and put together a panel of music experts to definitively pick the top 5 best new artists of 2012.. so far!
#1. Grimes
Montreal-based 24 year old singer/songwriter Grimes has become (very quickly) one of Canada's most praised artists and it's been said that it was Grimes who has restored Montreal as one of Canada's most musical cities. With her efforless ability to pair haunting music, with high-fashion looks, we've placed Grimes in the #1 spot on our list of the best new artists of 2012.. so far!
#2. Azealia Banks
Azealia Amanda Banks is a 21-year old rapper, singer and lyricist from Harlem, New York who is signed to Interscope/Polydor, and formerly known as Miss Bank$. Azealia became an internet-sensation at the end of 2011 when her vulgar-song 212 hit the web. Since then her fan-base has grown exponentially thanks in large part to her debut-EP, 1991. With blazing hot music, an amazing look and a hunger that is noticeable when you watch her on screen, we've decided to place Azealia at #2 on our list of the best new artists of 2012.. so far!
#3. Danny Brown
Daniel Sewell, better known by his stage name Danny Brown is a 31-year old rapper based out of Detroit, Michigan. 2011 saw Danny sign an official record deal and release his debut-mixtape, XXX but it's 2012 that will see his star seriously begin to rise. With plans for a debut album we at MTV News could not be more excited to see what Danny comes up with, and for that reason we've placed him at #3 on our list of the best new artists of the year.. so far!
#4. 2 Chainz
2 Chainz - formerly known as Tity Boi is a 35-year old rapper originally from Atlanta, Georgia. This summer will be busy for Mr. 2, he's joining his Beez In The Trap collaborator, Nicki Minaj on her Pink Friday tour, and will release his debut album, Based On a True Story in mid-August. In 2012 alone, he's guested on more than 50 songs for other artists, and for that reason, we've placed him #4 on our list of the best new artists of 2012.. so far!
#5. Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick is a 25-year old Compton, California native rapper who counts Dr. Dre as one of his biggest (and earliest!) fans, so much so that earlier this year he released a song that featured the rap heavyweight on the track. Fans and critics have been eagerly awaiting a debut album, which Kendrick just confirmed will be released in October of this year. Smooth beats, sharp lyrics, and he's not too hard on the eyes, for these reasons we've placed Kendrick Lamar at #5 on our list of the best new artists of 2012.. so far!
