I don't think those numbers are that great to be honest. They barely edged out The Dark Knight and it was reported that TDKR would sell upwards of $180 million with a possibility that it would outsell the Avengers and that did not happen at all. I definitely think it was expected to do more. The tragedies must have hit them harder then they expected.

The shooting cost the opening weekend at least $20 million, no doubt. The buzz would have been astounding had the tragedy not inundated news reports.

Guys really need to stop saying the shooting affected its sales. Because if hardcore fans want to see it, they would go see it no matter, just because something happened at one movie theater it doesnt mean it's gonna happen everywhere...

Considering it was a non 3-D movie it did amazing. It was impossible to beat the avengers, or even Harry Potter, let's all be realistic here!

After what happened you could see people saying they were scared to go to the movies now, let alone to watch this film, in fear of a copycat. It's not that wrong to assume that it could've done better if the incident never happened.

Either way, these aren't bad numbers at all.

Hoping that it will have an amazing longevity!!

It's the same with when 9/11 happened and people were scared to fly. Things like these instill fear in mass amounts of people all the time. Now that people have actually tried being copycats, people will be more scared.

Do you really think 'hardcore' fans make up for the entire gross? Many websites were reporting that the movie would make between $180 to $200 million before this awful tragedy happened. I mean, even Los Angeles Times reported that TDKR's tracking numbers were huge, even higher than The Avengers'.

The shooting clearly had an effect, and not only at TDKR. As you can see here, all movies' numbers dropped big time this weekend, more than usual. It's understandable that what happened would scare people and make them not want to see the movie this weekend.

The Avengers' records remain unbothered.
