Shakira & Obama help displaced Afro-Colombian communities
This is actually from April, but I'm posting it because a person in another thread tried to make it seem as if Shakira draws attention to her charity work when she never does. Where was this event publicized in the media? I didn't even know about it before today.
CARTAGENA, Colombia (AFP) - United States (US) President Barack Obama joined Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and pop superstar Shakira at a ceremony on Monday to hand over land titles to descendants of Colombia's runaway African slaves.
Shakira, who established the Pies Descalzos Foundation, a Colombian charity that runs early childhood programmes, introduced the event.
At the ceremony, representatives of some 1,000 Afro-Colombian families descended from runaway slaves received ownership titles to more than 3,350ha of ancestral land they occupy.
Cartagena used to be Spain's largest slave trading port in the Americas during the colonial era. Mr Obama has been in Cartagena, Colombia since Friday for the Summit of the Americas.
