Angel Haze talks Chipotle and Azealia Banks

Angel Haze is perched on the back of a raggedy couch in the dressing room at SoB’s nightclub listening to her iPod when Hive arrives to meet her (she plays NYC’s Santos Party House tonight). Clad in bulky red boots and garb she’s been bandying around as “androgynous,” the 20-year-old New York MC is personally reviewing her new album Reservation. She tells Hive she’s pleased with the outcome, although she’s already planning her next project. So as the buzz about her latest single, the feisty “Werkin’ Girls,” begins to build, Hive chatted it up with Haze about the stigma of being a rap brat, her infatuation with Chipotle, and an upcoming collaboration with Azealia Banks.
What are you listening to on your iPod?
Myself. Lately, it’s all I listen to.
How does it feel to hear your own music like that?
It feels great. I haven’t heard any new music. I love Childish Gambino but I haven’t heard his new mixtape. I’ve gotten a lot of comparisons to Danny Brown and I haven’t heard a single song of his; I’ve gotten a lot of comparisons to Azealia [Banks] but only heard one song. I just listen to my own music.
What’s the weirdest comparison you’ve heard about yourself?
Danny Brown, because I don’t know who he is. I can’t even formulate it in my brain: What would he sound like? I mean, his name’s Danny Brown! But I heard that Childish Gambino co-signs him so he has to be great.
What do you like about Childish Gambino?
I just love him so much. I’m a Childish Gambino groupie. He’s an intellectual. He says, “It’s 400 blows to these Truffaut n*ggas” and no one ever gets that. He’s smart. He’s brilliant.
A year ago you were getting attracting a lot of hype. Does the attention feel different this time around?
Yeah, ’cause before it was really undertone, like people saying she can rap but she doesn’t make her own music. That was the Fader: “Young rap brat Angel Haze can rap but she doesn’t do her own music.” Now it’s different ’cause I’m getting the recognition.
How does being called a ‘rap brat’ feel?
I don’t know how to take that! I’m assuming it’s because I’m 20 years old, and I say a lot of ****, so if it is kinda bratty maybe I am kinda bratty.
What makes a good rap brat?
Someone who is relentless in their commentary. I feel like Azealia could be a good rap brat, ’cause she says whatever the **** she wants to say and whenever she wants to say it. People say she complains a lot, but she just says her own opinion. Nobody wants to hear you complain, especially when you’re a girl, it’s like, “Shut up and make a sandwich, bitch.” I think every young person has the potential to be a rap brat but I think people of our generation have so much to say — we have too many opinions — and you say what you think and people older than us take that as a challenge.
What’s your favorite sandwich then?
Dude! I don’t even like sandwiches. I can tell you the Chipotle order of a young rap brat. You have to have extra rice. They get so mad at me. After we’re done I’m going to go next door to Chipotle and ask for extra rice until I’m satisfied with it and extra cheese and extra mild sauce ’cause I don’t really like meat.
You’re a Chipotle fan then?
Hell yes. I have so many plans, so once I get advances I’m gonna invest a ton and make a lot of money. A Chipotle franchise is one of the plans.
Where would you open your Chipotle franchise?
I’m gonna build one next to my house. Or maybe inside my house. I wanna be on some Tommy Lee Starbucks ****. I went to Turks and Caicos for a vacation and they had no American restaurants there. They said they brought KFC there and it failed miserably, but I think there’s a lot of money to be made there.
So what do you have coming up music-wise after Reservation?
Well Azealia Banks and I are in talks about a project. I go to L.A. next week. I might get her on a remix to “New York.” I love her; her flow is so nasty and mine is too, but in a totally different lane. I’m more hip hop and she’s more house music, so it’ll be interesting to see how the two merge, even if it’s just a beat change. She’s pretty cool; people take her too harshly.
Is this a collaboration that came about through industry contacts?
No, it’s us. Azealia mentioned me on her Twitter when she was on her come up. She was like, “I don’t know why people are talking about me and someone else when Angel Haze is better than all of us.” So we have that relationship.
