Thunderstorm Zaps Amazon's Cloud
Quote:
As of 11:21 PM EST Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud in North Virginia went down, due to severe thunder storms in the area. The Washington Post reports *******ial rains, “scary winds,” lightning and massive power outages in the D.C. area.

Amazon EC2 runs many major websites and services. Netflix, Instagram, and Pinterest have all been taken out of service during the outage. Half an hour later, in the midst of Friday night movie night, Netflix sent out the tweet above. Pinterest showed the following misleading alert, an hour an a half into the outage:

VentureBeat has reported that Instagram, and Ruby platform Heroku (that runs many other sites) were also down.
Here’s the play-by-play: At 11:21 PM EST, Amazon Web Services reported, ”We are investigating connectivity issues for a number of instances in the US-EAST-1 Region.” And at 11:31 EST, it added, ”We are investigating elevated errors rates for APIs in the US-EAST-1 (Northern Virginia) region, as well as connectivity issues to instances in a single availability zone.” By 11:49 EST, it reported that, *”Power has been restored to the impacted Availability Zone and we are working to bring impacted instances and volumes back online.” But by 12:20 EST the outage continued, “We are continuing to work to bring the instances and volumes back online. In addition, EC2 and EBS APIs are currently experiencing elevated error rates.” At 12:54 AM EST, AWS reported that “EC2 and EBS APIs are once again operating normally. We are continuing to recover impacted instances and volumes.”
As of 1:15 am EST, Netflix appears to be back up and running, but Pinterest, Instagram and Heroku still appear to be down. It was just an hour-and-a-half during peak traffic time for these affected companies, but this event follows a six-and-a-half hour outage on EC2 two weeks ago. And one of the selling points of the Cloud is that there are redundancies to prevent just such occurrences. A small step backwards, perhaps, for cloud computing.
UPDATE: As of 1:50 AM EST, Pinterest was back up.
UPDATE: As of 9:30 AM EST, Mashable reports that Instagram is still down.

!!!!
LITERALLY. The weather report said nothing about the potential of a storm until within hours of it actually hitting.

My power is still out.
I'm in a Starbucks right now charging my computer and phone. This whole day has been one awful #firstworldproblems meme.

Right? All that hype over flop ass Irene, and not a peep about this. Honestly one of the worst storms I can remember. The power went out but the lightning was so bright that we were still able to see everything.

I've been out of power since last night and they said were not getting it back till 1pm Monday afternoon and it went out 9pm Friday. I was coming home from work round midnight and there were 3 fallen down trees blocking the road and a powerline. We had to break out the chainsaw last night to move those massive trees so I could get home. There are supposed to be bad storms tonight and tomorrow night too. That's just my road the main highways had trees fallen down blocking lanes and stuff as well and lightning was going off fairly closeby one bolt hit a quarter mile in front of me striking a tree.

I live in Baltimore not VA, but we were hit by the same storm system. Even the traffic lights by my apartment are out.

Yes, I live in Northern Maryland. Thankfully the power in my neighborhood came back on this morning, but there's still like over 200K homes without power.
And there's this BIG ASS tree in front of my house so I always get scared when storms like this happen. Trees fells, power lines were on the ground, and to make it worse, it's HOT as hell, and they said it might take a whole week to get the power back on for everyone in Montgomery, PG County, and D.C.
Oh, and my Instagram ****ed up too.

I know!! And it cut off the end of our Madea movie so you KNOW the blacks twas' not pleased!!! It also cut off Magic Mike mid-movie down the hall so the gays were not pleased as well.
It was madness. Driving home, there were so many trees and debris in the way. Just chaos.

There was a car completely flipped over on its back in the Arundel Mills parking lot.

And earlier this month, I was driving home with some friends from this business seminar in Baltimore and we were listening to the radio and an emergency alert interrupted and came on for a tornado warning and they were like "EVERYONE TAKE COVER RIGHT NOW"
I've never been so scared in my life. I almost ******* myself.
