The abortion debate thread
So I made this thread because I would like to know what everyone's position is on this topic. I know abortion is a very controversial issue, and as such, I would like to have a civil discussion on the respective topic.
Opponents of abortion assert that the killing of the fetus is murder, and is akin to killing a human adult. Other concerns include the argument that abortion is an act of discrimination against the unborn, and that an abortion can increase the likelihood of getting breast cancer. Many arguments support anti-abortion/pro-life ideology often have ground originating from religion. For instance, the Roman Catholic Church ardently suggests that life begins at conception, and as such, abortion is wrong because it deprives the fetus of a future. Similarly, some pro-life Christians use various scriptures (including Luke 1:15 and Jeremiah 1:4-5) to proclaim their pro-life stance.
For proponents of abortion, concerns over women's rights is by far the greatest rationale. Pro-choice adherents avouch that a woman has the right to terminate her pregnancy, since it is her body. Moral philosopher Judith Thomson, a vocal supporter of abortion, drew parallels with forcing a woman to bear a child to forcing a person's body to act as a dialysis machine for another person who has kidney failure. Others argue that by having the government enforcing bans on the procedure, it creates a double standard that favors males. As such, this can be interpreted as a form of female oppression under a system that encourages inequality. Other arguments include sexual emancipation.
So the question still stand. Are you pro-life or pro-choice, and why?
