They're not mutually exclusive properties. They co-exist in the universe.

Everything has a cause and effect, but we have the free will to choose the cause and ultimately the effect. They co-exist in harmony.

I think it might not exist such a think like free-will. I remember one episode of Lost where the dude is basically ****ed up because he must follow the pattern the universe has for him or he will either **** up stuff or do what he has to do anyway even if he's not aware of it because that's the way it is.
