Nearly 2,500 people gathered outside of the Justice Center in Newton. Most of them spoke out against Providence Road Baptist Church Pastor Charles Worley. He pastors a church in Maiden, NC. In a sermon, Eyewitness News first told you about nearly a week ago, the pastor suggested getting rid of homosexuals by putting them behind an electric fence.

The vast majority of people at Sunday's protest condemned the comments.

"I just can't believe that Jesus Christ would be about the kind of hate that we were hearing. It's important for all of us to stand up against that," said Liz Snell a protestor from Vermont.

Across the street from the main protest, counter-protestors from a church in Georgia stood up for some
of the pastor's comments.

"I don't totally agree with some of the extra-biblical things he said, but as far as homosexuality being a sin, I believe that," said protester Brad Cheatham.

Catawba County's Sheriff said two citations were passed out Sunday. One was given to a pastor from Georgia who used a bull horn, but there were no arrests. He said a couple of protestors showed up at Providence Road Baptist Church even though they were asked not to. However, no one was hurt.

This protest was VERY CLOSE to my work place, and has created a lot of buzz.

I decided to post this because of the recent thread concerning Amendment 1 passing in North Carolina!

I seen this on channel 14 a few days ago.My hometown might be "boring" BUT it's one of the more Gay-friendly cities in the state.

My co-worker goes to the church that this pastor preaches at.

My mother was enraged about this dude. She's not even for gay rights or anything, but she's been actively speaking out about this guy. She said that, "my son's a human being too, and he doesn't deserve to be put in an electric fence."

It made me teary eyed.

Just so you know, most of the people protesting were for gay rights, etc,..

I feel like this could be a wake up call for this area.

I really, really, think that this is a move in the right direction. It's most definitely the snowball effect going on. Ever since amendment one passed, there's been so much media exposure concerning gay rights.

I just hope one day we can move past this.

Of course... but considering the area... North Carolina isn't really known for an outspoken LGBT community.

Like, we're talking 4 SRS bible belt country.

Tell me about it.Some extremely wacky religious person was at my school back in April wearing a fanny pack calling Whitney Houston and anyone who was in a sorority "****s".He also used some gay slurs and spoke down about everyone who wasn't him.

Wow. Well.... my friends and I call the sorority girls, "sorostitutes."

One of those friends being a Kappa Delta.

But really, that's awful.

Everybody on campus knows I'm gay.

There are some who aren't all that ok with it, but my fraternity brothers seem to like me.
