Men in Black 3 was able to take in a modest $1.550 million from midnight shows. That's an underwhelming debut for such an established property and it certainly doesn't bode well for the four-day weekend.
Comparable midnight openings include Clash of the Titans with $1.545 million and Bruno with $1.6 million.
Chernobyl Diaries, the low-budget horror flick that's opening in the shadow on MiB3, took in $525,000.

But now it’s clear that Barry Sonnenfeld’s/Rick Baker’s latest playing in very wide release at 4,248 theaterslooks to open in the range of $18M today and only $75M for the 4-day holiday. That’s not anywhere close to the $90M which Hollywood thought this popular franchise could open its threequel.
This makes the 5th major studio release that has underperformed at the start of Summer 2012, though not as badly as the others. Even overseas, depending on who’s analyzing, MIB3 is a mixed bag. My Sony sources are quick to point out that it opened bigger in Russia than The Avengers. But rival studios tell me that “despite great tracking internationally, their midweek openings in Australia, France, Korea, and Germany are mostly behind Battleship or John Carter. Weird.”
Ps. For your information, the ultra low budget 'Chernobyl Diaries' opens 100k stronger than the ultra big budget 'Battleship' on midnight
That's not bad, I thought it would flop way harder tbh, I didn't even know there was a new one until a few days ago. I'm not sure why the studio thought another sequel 10 years after the last would be highly anticipated.

It cost 300 million plus God knows how much on advertising...it needs to make a LOT of money to break even. 1.5m midnight is pretty bad. But things could turn around during the weekend.

However, the considering the rumored 250 million budget and near 100 million promotional budget.... It is on the brink of the edge.

True, the budget was rather ridiculous. Most movies need to gross 2.5 times their budget worldwide to breakeven so that would be like almost $900 million
Midnight Update: MIB 3 didn't attract much interest at midnight, earning just $1.55 million from 2,233 locations. That's obviously nowhere close to The Hangover Part II's $10.4 million midnight start last Memorial Day weekend; more concerning, though, is that it doesn't compare favorably to past Memorial Day sequels Terminator Salvation and Sex and the City 2 (both around $3 million) either. Those movies debuted on Thursday, and wound up with five-day openings of $65.3 million and $51.04 million, respectively. Meanwhile, Chernobyl Diaries earned $525,000 from over 1,300 theaters at midnight.
Dead at Chernobyl Diaries' midnight opens bigger than Battleship's.
Success is relative...this could flop. And it was not predicted to smash either, in fact many predicted it could be a flop. Hollywood lately has had a big problem keeping budgets under control and turning films that should have been hits into financial disasters.
The younger generation are not familiar with the Men In Black movies. They've waited too long.
But still, the opening numbers are great. And its expected t earn 200 million domestically by Monday. Thats almost its budget from just a 4 day release.
