South Africa up in arms over Gaga concert
Since it's becoming clear that Gaga is going to be protested at all kinds of high-profile concerts, I thought it would be kind of cool to (A) stop making new threads about it and (B) chronicle the the history of the tour's controversy in one place.
SPOTLIGHT
SOUTH AFRICA
Quote:
Last week we reported that Lady Gaga's announced South African concerts in Johannesburg on November 30 and Cape Town on December 3 were met with such a fan frenzy that Little Monsters flocking to the Computicket website for tickets crashed its servers.
Well, Gaga is now being greeted with a song and dance routine she heard throughout the Asian leg of her "Born This Way Ball" tour – religious groups in the country are calling for the concerts to be canceled. Many of the tour's dates in Asia were plagued by protests from Christian and Islamic groups, culminating in a particularly frightening situation in Indonesia, where an Islamic extremist organization threatened the pop superstar with violence, forcing her to cancel a sold-out show in Jakarta.
Now, a group calling itself Christians Against Lady Gaga & Beyonce’s SA Tours (we didn't realize Beyonce was planning a tour, but just go with it) has built up a few thousand followers, all of whom are hoping to stop "filthy demon" Lady Gaga from performing in the country.
The group began a four-day "prayer avalanche" to support their cause on Thursday and will assemble on July 7 to think of what steps to take next.
We believe everyone is entitled to their opinion, but a look through some of the messages on the Facebook page really makes you wonder how a group that should be espousing tolerance given their religious affiliation could be so dang intolerant … but that's something we think, sadly, all too often when LGBT and women's issues enter the conversation, as they do the second someone mentions Gaga, a vocal adovocate for both.

Lady Gaga responds to Jakarta concert controversy
By Sarah Anne Hughes
Lady Gaga in Manila. (AFP/GETTY IMAGES) Lady Gaga has responded to the controversy surrounding a stop on her Born This Way tour planned for Jakarta next month.
The Associated Press reported last week that a permit for the June 3 show had been denied by Indonesia’s national police over concerns voiced by religious authorities and conservative politicians that her “sexy clothes and dance moves would corrupt the youth.” The Indonesian hard-line group Islamic Defenders Front said Gaga would bring “the faith of Satan to the country and thus would destroy the nation’s morals,” according to the Jakarta Post.
But MTV reports that Gaga’s tour organizers are attempting to negotiate a solution so the show can go on. According to the Jakarta Post, the national police have said that if organizers can obtain recommendations from a number of government institutions the permit will be given.
Mama Monster herself weighed in on the situation on Twitter.
“The Jakarta situation is 2-fold: Indonesian authorities demand I censor the show & religious extremist separately, are threatening violence,” Gaga tweeted Tuesday. “If the show does go on as scheduled, I will perform the BTWBall alone.”
Some Little Monsters have expressed concerns, asking Gaga to be careful and even to cancel the show for her own safety. However, Gaga’s Indonesian fan base seems determined to make the concert happen. The group has been using its Twitter account, which boasts well over 24,000 followers, to share information about the show and allay any fears.
Gaga also ran into resistance in the Philippines, where young Christians protested against the singer for “promoting immorality,” the Associated Press reported. But as the AP notes, Gaga’s show in Manila Monday was deemed not to have violated any laws, so she will be allowed to perform again Tuesday.
The singer joked on Twitter, “Don’t worry, if I get thrown in jail in Manila, Beyonce will just bail me out.”

Jakarta Police Would Dispatch Up to 4,000 Officers for Lady Gaga Show
The Jakarta Police say they were ready dispatch 4,000 officers to secure Lady Gaga’s Jakarta concert, scheduled for June 3, and warned the Islamic Defenders Front against attempting to mess up with the show.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said on Tuesday that his office was awaiting the National Police’s final decision regarding the concert, regarding whether to issue it the permit it needs to go on.
If the National Police grant the permit, the Jakarta Police would dispatch between 2,000 and 4,000 personnel to secure the concert, Rikwanto said.
“We’ll anticipate any possibilities. We’re even ready to smuggle some police officers into the middle of the crowd of audience,” he said, adding that the officers would not wear their uniforms.
On Monday, the hard-line Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) said it had purchased 150 tickets for the Lady Gaga concert so it could enter the venue and stop the show from going on.
Such an action would not be unprecedented: earlier this month, FPI members stormed the Salihara cultural center where Canadian writer and liberal Muslim activist Irshad Manji was holding a book launch event and threatened violence if it didn’t cease immediately. Manju had to be escorted out under a heavy guard as the police shut down the event.
The FPI is one of several groups that voiced their opposition to the Lady Gaga concert last week, citing the singer’s “vulgar” outfits and performances. That previously caused the Jakarta Police to refuse to issue a recommendation for the show, earlier cited by the National Police as one of the “requirements” for it to issue the permit.
On Friday, though, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyantoko said all parties involved should try to reach some sort of compromise, which could involve certain requirements about Lady Gaga’s lyrics, choreography and appearance. And on Monday, National Police Chief Gen. Timur Pradopo was summoned by the House of Representatives to answer questions regarding the Lady Gaga controversy and other disputes.
After that, the National Police said they might issue a permit for the show, and the Jakarta Police said they would abide by such a decision.
On Tuesday, Rikwanto warned the FPI against making trouble during the concert.
“There will be legal sanctions for those abusing the law,” he said.
More than 52,000 people are set to attend the sold out show at Bung Karno Stadium (GBK) in Central Jakarta.
The promoter, Big Daddy, said on its Twitter account that was going on with its preparations for the show, although the National Police said they wouldn’t announce their decision about the permit until next week.
“We’ll divide the GBK into several security rings. Sorry, as the impact it will require longer time to enter the venue; as there will be many checkpoints,” Big Daddy said on one of its tweets on Tuesday morning.
It added it was hiring some security experts to ensure safety at the show.
On Monday night, Lady Gaga played the first of two shows in Manila, after Christian youth groups had protested for days against the show.
The singer is in Asia as part of her world tour, “The Born This Way Ball.”

Lady Gaga’s June 3 concert in Jakarta, Indonesia — the subject of protests and complaints by that country’s hard-line Islamist organizations — will not go forward as scheduled. The Jakarta Globe reports a police spokesman as saying, “The National Police said verbally that [the concert] would not be permitted,” while the Jakarta Post reports that Gaga has become the first foreign artist ever denied a concert permit by Indonesian authorities.
A spokesperson for the National Police said that it denied the permit based on the police recommendation and the protests from the Islamist groups who had accused Gaga of being vulgar, corrupting the morals of the country’s youth, and worshiping Satan. One group said it would send crowds of its supporters to intercept Gaga at the airport and prevent her from staging the show.
Nevertheless, there was plenty of public support for the concert, which was sold out. The concert promoter told the Jakarta Globe that the idea that Gaga worships the devil is ridiculous. “Lady Gaga is a Catholic and she has many charitable works. How could she be a devil worshiper?” the promoter said. He also had promised that Gaga would tone down her provocative outfits for the show: “The concert will be different from video clips [online]. It will not be vulgar.”

The promoters of Lady Gaga's show in Indonesia, which saw its application for a permit rejected earlier this week, have vowed to fight on and make sure that the show goes ahead.
The singer's show in the Indonesian capital Jakarta is booked to take place on June 3, but was thrown into doubt on Tuesday (May 15), when local authorities denied the promoter's application for a permit after Islamic groups in the country expressed opposition to Gaga's "vulgar" style.
Production company Big Daddy, who are putting on the show, issued a statement on Twitter calling on Gaga's notoriously active fanbase 'little monsters' to be patient. It said: ''Little monsters, be patient please. We will keep you updated. We are still fighting.''
One group who protested the singer's show, the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), have vowed to do anything to stop the gig from taking place. FPI Jakarta chairman Habib Salim Alatas has said that he believes Gaga is ''the devil's messenger'' and spreads ''satanic teaching''.
He told the Associated Foreign Press: ''If Lady Gaga still wants to perform here, go ahead. But please be prepared for chaos in Jakarta. We are ready to be thrown to jail and be killed - we will do anything to stop it.''
Saud Usman Nasution, a spokesman for the local police also said there was no way the show could take place. He said: "We still deny the organisers the permit. The Jakarta police have said they do not recommend the Lady Gaga performance here, and they are the ones responsible for security, so there's no way around it."
Gaga is touring Europe as part of her 'Born This Way Ball' tour, will also play Manchester's Evening News Arena on September 11 and a one-off date in Ireland at Dublin's Aviva Stadium four days later. The Darkness will support the singer on all four dates.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Pop singer Lady Gaga arrived in the Philippines on Saturday to cheers from fans and protests from young Christians calling for the cancellation of her upcoming concerts.
About 200 Christian young people marched in Manila for a second straight day, holding placards urging the singer to "respect our faith, stop the blasphemy."
The Biblemode Youth Philippines members plan to hold a vigil starting Sunday near the concert venue. They said they are offended by Lady Gaga's music, particularly her song "Judas," which they said mocks Jesus Christ.
But throngs of shrieking, camera-toting fans mobbed her, seeking her autograph as she walked into her hotel surrounded by bodyguards. She arrived in Manila late Saturday on a private jet.

MANILA, Philippines -- A religious group is praying the upcoming concerts of Grammy winner Lady Gaga in Manila will not push through.
The group called Biblemode Youth Philippines is leading a campaign to have the flamboyant female artist banned in the Philippines. It said it will start a prayer vigil on Saturday until Gaga arrives in Manila for her two-night concert on May 21 and 22 to open the SM Arena.
This will be Lady Gaga's second visit to Manila, who staged her first concert at the Araneta Coliseum years back.
Calling Gaga the "anti-Christ," the group criticized Gaga for her skimpy costumes and provocative songs, such as "Judas," which the group said is a direct insult to Jesus Christ.
"Yung kanyang paggamit ng imagery at mga lyrics na direktang lumalaban sa Panginoon, 'yun ang hindi namin kinikilala," Pastor Reyzel Cayanan of Biblemode Youth told ABS-CBN News.
Renen de Guia of Ovation Productions Inc., the promoter of Lady Gaga's concerts in Manila, quickly dismissed the group's claim that the artist is the anti-Christ.
"Walang katotohanan na anti-Christ si Lady Gaga. Artists constantly reinvent themselves and want to be controversial," de Guia said in a statement.
"Those who criticize Lady Gaga are the ones who won't be watching her concert anyway," de Guia also said.
The Bible group's campaign comes a day after the American singer was refused a permit in Indonesia, where she is scheduled to perform in Jakarta on June 3. Indonesian police said cited security concerns after Islamic groups voiced strong objections to her "vulgar" style.

MANILA, Philippines – A lawyer on Friday said he will meet with Pasay City Mayor Antonio Calixto to air his concerns over the upcoming concert of controversial singer Lady Gaga.
Atty. Romulo Macalintal said he is scheduled to meet Calixto at the Pasay City Hall at around 10:30 a.m. today to deliver his letter asking the government to monitor the concert. Lady Gaga is holding 2 concerts at The Arena at the SM Mall of Asia complex in Pasay on May 21 and 22.
He said this is “to ensure the show will not violate or make a mockery of [the Catholic] religion.”
Lady Gaga always gets media attention for her unusual and sometimes over the top costumes during events.
She particularly earned the ire of conservative Catholics when she released her single “Judas”.
Macalintal said the song and its music video were sacrligeous.
He added a Lady Gaga concert could destroy the moral fiber of the youth in a predominantly Catholic country such as the Philippines.
Lady Gaga’s concert was recently cancelled in Indonesia after strong opposition from conservative Islamic groups.
“Sa Indonesia at sa South Korea, pinrotesta na iyan sapagakat may mga very controversial at Satanic lyrics ang kanyang inaawit,” Macalintal said.
“Sa Indonesia, ang sabi doon, dineny nila ang permit because she is a very controversial person and it threateans to destroy children’s sense of morality. Tayo bang Pilipino hindi pwedeng gawin ito?” he added.
Macalintal said he will ask Calixto to also revise the permit it gave to the organizers so that it can invoke Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code, which penalizes “immoral doctrines, obscene publications and exhibitions, and indecent shows.”
The lawyer said any person found violating this law may be imprisoned from 6 to 12 months.
Aside from Macalintal, other Christian groups have expressed their opposition against the two concerts.
Biblemode Youth Philippines described the artist as “anti-Christ”. It said it will start a prayer vigil on Saturday until Gaga arrives in Manila for her two-night concert.

This is getting annoying. I'm so glad when she's done with the Asian leg.
Great idea to put it all in one place, since like I said, it's becoming really annoying.
