Nicola Formichetti on the meat dress, Gaga, comments, etc.
Quote:
“There was a story before that said I hate fat people, which I said as a joke. The following week another story said I hate old people when what I said was that the older generation should make space for the younger ones,”
“I was shocked that so many people cared about my comments.”
“She told me that that was the most comfortable dress I have ever put on her. It wasn’t heavy because we used cheap and thin Argentinean meat. We bought a lot of expensive meat cuts but they all fell off. We decided on the meat dress as a way of taking a piss at the red carpet,”
“Gaga and I are attracted to the same aesthetic. We are connected. We are in sync. We research a lot. We pull a lot of references. When the date of the performance or event is closer, we forget about everything we’ve researched. That’s when the magic happens,” says Formichetti of his method to dressing Lady Gaga.
“We twist it, wear it upside down. We always say f**k fashion because we love it so much. It’s one of our slogans: F**k Fashion. We love fashion so much we want to destroy it, kill it and recreate it again and again to make it fresh.”
"I want young people to be able to buy into what I design. When I was young I wanted to buy designer brands even if all I could afford was the cheapest wallet, the cheapest pen, the cheapest T-shirt because I wanted to be a part of it. When I was 16 my first designer item was a Vivienne Westwood T-shirt and I felt so cool and great. I felt like a superstar. I want to extend that feeling to younger people now,”
“I had a beard before and was a little heavy. They would call me bear and I didn’t like it. I was an Asian bear, a panda. Then my friends started calling me Nicopanda and it stuck.”
But his signature look he says is very much like his DNA. “It’s a mix of the east and the west. High-low. It’s always evolving and I am open to everything. I like embracing new things. I’m not an elitist. I hate the fashion industry sometimes because it becomes so focused on the elite. I want fashion to be within reach.”
