2001 was quite an interesting year in American history. President George W. Bush, one of our most-disliked Presidents in decades, was inaugurated. Enron Corporation suffered the largest bankruptcy in history. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. A lot of horrible, awful things occurred that year. But, one good thing about that year was the music! In 2001, 4 women emerged as the biggest forces in American R&B music: Janet Jackson, who scored her 5th straight #1 album, the biggest first week sales of her career, her 9th #1 hit and 2 Top 10 hits, Mary J. Blige, who scored her only #1 hit, Alicia Keys, who scored her first #1 album, #1 single and Top 10 hit and finally, Aaliyah, who posthumously earned her first #1 album and some of the best reviews of any R&B album released that year. TIME FOR A RATE!



In this rate, the good voters of ATRL will listen to each song on these 4 critically-acclaimed 2001 R&B albums, score each 1-10, and then send me their ballots in private messages. Who will win? Will it be Aaliyah - the sultry bad girl whose ambitious records garnered her legions of followers, Mary J. Blige - the Hip Hop-Soul Queen who has made a career of her struggles with drugs, alcohol, life and relationships, Janet Jackson - the soft-voiced vixen, Pop legend and sister to the late King of Pop or Alicia Keys - the skilled classical pianist from Hell's Kitchen?
