Yeah but I think the supermarkets are to blame more than the people. The amount of **** they throw out because it's one day past the sell-by date is ridiculous  I used to work at Waitrose and it would be thousands of £ worth of food that would just get thrown out per month.

If we are to blame supermarkets, we are to blame the consumers, and therefore the people. You cannot blame the companies because in the end, people control them. We may be brainwashed, but it is our "need" to buy things that make malls and supermarkets exist.
And concerning expiration dates and such, I think we have become to picky and too spoiled here in the West. Noone buys anything that has passed its expiration date, perhaps rightfully so, but I bet there is nothing wrong with food well after the date.
