It's both clever and an excuse; I do think she swallowed her pride and worked with these "mainstream" people because she wants to be famous, but she's also intelligent enough and I'm sure she did what she could to keep her songs from being formulaic. So yes, she's believable because she isn't going to put out anything formulaic.

And FTR, she never said she hated Dr. Luke, but the soulless songs he made with the fave pop tarts. Her work with him isn't replicas of anything, and has her own distinguished lyrics/style. "Lies" will be the same. Basic bitches too basic to grasp it, of course.

She mentioned "corrupt American ideology" on her first album, too, so it's not like the theme is out of place. Gaga did something very similar in The Fame Monster. Did people call her a sell-out then?

I've never got the love for Marina, especially this era. I don't see her as one of those 'anti-commercial genius'' like Kelis, Robyn, MIA etc. Her music just isn't that great.

It's a nice attempt at making commercial music and keeping the illusion of artistic integrity. Unfortunately, it's been done far too crude for her claim to be believable, basically what she's trying to do is recreate this:

At the same time, you can tell she's doing the whole thing mockingly, so she's not throwing herself into the concept of fame/money/excess as convincingly as Gaga did on her first album and making the whole thing satirical. It's really all just one big mess.
