The Hunger Games director Gary Ross has apparently told Lionsgate and Summit that he will not helm the sequel Catching Fire.

It was reported earlier this week that the writer-director would not return for Catching Fire unless he received a significant increase on his $3m salary, but an informer has now claimed that Ross is actually not concerned with a big money offer.

Ross apparently turned down Catching Fire to work on a project he's personally written rather than repeat himself by taking on a sequel.

A production source told The Playlist that Ross informed Hunger Games producers Summit and Lionsgate of his intention to exit the franchise earlier this week.

There is no information on possible replacements for Ross.

I'm not here for the awkward silences and camera shots of the last few Harry Potter movies. Damn it, just stay with the Hunger Games, Gary, there aren't that many movies to make anyways!

I thought we were finally going to get a more cohesive and consistent franchise this time instead of the director change-outs of Twilight and Harry Potter.

While many have expressed their devastation at the news that director Gary Ross would not be returning to direct its sequel, Catching Fire, a source close to the situation tells Celebuzz that “nothing is official.”

After some lengthy negotiations, many are citing Gary’s film-making eye to be the main reason he would consider not coming back, not money.


Gary has directed a number of varying projects from Pleasantville to Seabiscuit, and The Playlist is reporting that the “burning desire simply isn’t there to spend another couple of years with Katniss in the Capitol.”

You need to calm down and stop being so overdramatic.

It worked for the best in the Potter Franchise. Maybe now we'll get some good action scenes in Catching Fire.

Catherine Hardwicke directed Twillght 1 & it was GOOD (because it was her initiative, there was no money affair behind) then they rushed her into doing New Moon immediately but she didn't want to, she wanted to take her time to do a good sequel ... They fired her & hired Chris Weitz. Twilight 2, 3 & 4 are just CRAP.

I think the same thing is happening here ... + Gary Ross is co-writer on Hunger Games which is even scarier if they fire him ... The adaptation of "Catching Fire" is gonna be BAAAAAD.

They should let people finish what they begin.
