I'd say she was that way during the Poker Face era. She was really pretty and almost looked plastic at times. She had some of the best promo pics during that time and that was during one of her biggest rises to fame. But I don't think it would make a difference either way.

I think the fact she's "ugly" compared to people like Katy Perry, Rihanna and Beyonce has played in her favour. Her fans feel like they can visually relate to her, rather than have to dream about looking like her. It's a different relationship, on a purely superficial level.
