This can be see with Lady Gaga with Born This Way and Lil Wayne with Tha Carter 4. However, I don't think we've had an instance in music history period where an album went double platinum first week, or if we did have this happen, it must be rare. The point is that going double platinum isn't something that happens normally.

The album that did it was the bestselling album of 2000 as well as the decade.
It happened once and it's never happening again.

Fans Buy, Buy, Buy *NSYNC's New Album
The Jive debut from *NSYNC, "No Strings Attached," featuring the hit "Bye Bye Bye," burst out of the starting gate yesterday with an impressive show of sales strength that could culminate into the biggest first week ever in the SoundScan era, many retailers said. Jive shipped 4.2 million units, and reorders were already pouring in hours after the album went on sale yesterday (March 21.) On its first day of release, the album sold over a million copies in the United States alone.
The SoundScan record for one-week sales in the U.S. belongs to labelmates Backstreet Boys, who moved 1.13 million units of their "Millennium" set in its debut week last summer.

*NSYNC Breaks the SoundScan Barrier and Shatters Sales Record
To steal a phrase originally coined for Frank Sinatra: it's *NSYNC's world, we just live in it.
The music industry's bar has been raised and the boy band cemented its full-blown phenom status, as *NSYNC's Jive debut "No Strings Attached" sold a whopping 2.42 million units in its first week of sales, the first time in the SoundScan era that any album has sold more than 2 million copies in a single frame. *NSYNC's opening volley more than doubles the previous SoundScan-era record set last year when labelmates Backstreet Boys' "Millennium" moved 1.13 million copies in its first week and sets a new record for best one-week sales.
*NSYNC's monster sales figures are also almost ten times greater than that of the number two record album in the country, Santana's "Supernatural," which sold 265,000 copies last week. And for even more perspective, ponder this: "No Strings Attached" sold more copies last week than the rest of the Billboard 200 top 40 combined.

Tearin' Up the Charts
Arguably the biggest U.S. boy band of all time, *NSYNC crafted some of the most indelible pop hits of the past 15 years. Their second album, 2000's "No Strings Attached," still holds the record for the all-time biggest first-week album sales in SoundScan history, moving over 2.42 million units in a single frame. "It's Gonna Be Me" ruled the Hot 100 for weeks in 2000.
