Celeb News: Lennox: Rihanna speaking against DA would be so powerful

Annie Lennox has said that it would be "so ****ing powerful" if Rihanna publicly spoke out against domestic abuse.

The 'Talk That Talk' star has been at the centre of controversy recently following her decision to collaborate with her ex-boyfriend, singer Chris Brown, for a remix of her track 'Birthday Cake'. Brown attacked Rihanna on the evening of the 2009 Grammy Awards and was subsequenrly sentenced to five years of probation and six months of community labour, with a US court rejecting his plea to end his probation term last month (February 10).

In an interview with The Telegraph, Lennox said that Rihanna could become a "tremendous spokesperson" for the issue if she decided to make her views on domestic abuse public, but also conceded she should not be forced into discussing her own experiences.

"Here is a young woman who has been through domestic violence and she could become a tremendous spokesperson for that issue but the choice is hers," she said. "It's not up to anybody else to do that."

She went on to add: Of course if she did choose to do that it would be so ****ing powerful but it's her personal right to choose it or not. We all have our own issues and we have to deal with them in our own way.

Lennox also criticised pop stars who rely on their sexuality to boost their popularity, adding: "The world has become more sexualised. I thought the world was already sexualised when I was younger but it sells and sells and now it's just a marketing device. The display of sexuality is part of our nature but I think when it becomes a cliché and that's the only thing you are using to draw people's attention it becomes one-dimensional."

I agree with her.

However, through her actions Rihanna has made it perfectly clear that she has no interest in anything of the sort. People act like she has an obligation to this and she doesn't.

She is a full rounded person - not just a victim of circumstance.

The nature of her being suggests that she'd be a a role model, especially if she herself experienced what many silent women around world are experiencing at this very moment. Having the power to influence, having the power to change is something you just cannot give on. IMO.

I love Ri, but not speaking up against it and promoting awareness of the issue is being egoistic.

Just when people assume you have learned something from something, you prove them wrong. I think she is being stupid and senseless.

Do people even take Rihanna's feelings into consideration?
I have no idea how she feels about what happened but
I can't imagine constantly reliving/being reminded of something like that.
Maybe she's just trying to put it behind her and forget it ever happened.

Unfortunately, you can't use that argument. The fact that Rihanna is responding to the controversy means that she's very aware of what she's doing.

I agree with what she said. Rihanna has a lot of power culturally IMO. Whatever she does, young women copy. She would be amazing doing something like this but she obviously doesn't want to, because she doesn't want it to define her. She said that in an interview a while ago. And at the end of the day it's her choice. She doesn't have an obligation to speak out on this and she shouldn't have to if she doesn't want to be that girl.
