Disowning Your Race, Heritage, Ethnicity
I'm writing a research paper on why someone would disown any of the aforementioned things in the title and I thought it'd be great to hear from some others. I also need the help because it's due tomorrow.
Anything would be appreciated.

Oh gurl good luck. I have a WWII paper due tomorrow.
Anyway, I would say... pressure from society? It's a pretty vague topic.

To be honest and some might judge me for this, but at times you get involved with other things in life that just makes you forget about your origin. I mean i am an international student here in Canada and trust me I do miss my home country and its culture and everything, but not as much as one would expect.
I don't know,it's just you start making priorities and such things just slip by. I mean it's unfortunate for sure but

Yeah, a big reason as mentioned above would be societal pressures (i.e. environment).

Did you start it? That seems a lot scarier because it doesn't seem as if you have too much room to wiggle.

Yes, I'm working out the society side of it right now. I already have my intro and it only needs to be about 6 pages because it's only a draft, but she wants the stupid ass peer review thing to happen. I hate peer reviews.

That's interesting. I often hear stories about eastern cultures being upset how western society affects the youth. Thank you. I'll try to run with this.

Fun. Thank god I'm on the other side of the spectrum (grading college essays). Don't pull an all-nighter in one sitting - we instructors can smell 'em a mile away.
I think people disown their heritage out of shame and embarrassment. I know many Hispanics who shun their heritage because Mexican and other Latin American countries are looked down on as poor and inferior.

My English professor last semester exposed me for doing that with one of my papers. My goal is to reach at least 5 pages. I don't think it'll be that hard, since I love to write.
Thanks for your help. Embarrassment and shame didn't even cross my mind.

Damn, does everyone have a project due tomorrow? I do too.
Anyways, I am Mexican-Asian. I sometimes refer to myself as Black, since I look like it anyways. My Mexican side family are so embarrassing, they're loud and ****, and don't know how to keep their mouth shut. They are not aware some Americans can speak spanish so they just say whatever **** they want.
My Asian side family, however are completely opposite, they are quiet and secluded from everyone. They do not allow anyone in the house, and give them a dirty look if they step in the yard. And whenever we're on a restaurant they always ask for rice.
I still love them though.

I guess everyone does have something due tomorrow, lmao.
I'll definitely be incorporating this into my paper. Thanks.

I don't know if this any helpful to you at all, but for me I stopped caring much about my German heritage when I moved away at the age of 16 because I never felt like I was deeply rooted in it in the first place. I started liking this place a lot more, found myself not missing things from back there and disowning it not on purpose, but sort of by default. I guess I sort of never felt at home there in the first place, even if I didn't necessarily notice while I was there. So I guess I never really had one of those big reasons (such as repression, or disowning my family) to do it.

I agree, the topic is vague, and you might want to narrow your scope. Are you American or North American and thus, are trying to approach this from the perspective of a racial or socio-economic minority or do you have another angle. If it's the former and not the latter, then you could focus on racism and how its systemic impact are to blame. Like, how being born black makes a person more likely to be poor, than if that person were born white or something along those lines.

Oh my goodness, this definitely helps. It's whole new point of view. Now my paper won't seem so one sided. Thank you!

I didn't even think to do this. I just kind of jumped in so I'd have something on paper. I guess it's kind of a mix of many things.
