The Evolution of the Single, 1977-2012...
US-based figures. Left axis in millions, data supplied by the RIAA.
And by the end of this year, around 5 million Americans will pay for a music subscription (Spotify/Rhapsody/Muve Music/Rdio/Mog/Zune Pass).
5 millions at $110 a year = $550 million, the equivalent of 550 million ($0.99) MP3 downloads.

Yeah, this isn't surprising. Singles have just started to become massive sellers. They used to only support the selling of albums, but now it's almost the other way around in many cases.

I wonder what year that legal downloads will peak and start to decline.
My guess? 2015 or 2016

I wouldn't say that.
It's just much bigger now due to all these new single artists.
I swear, my dad owns over 500 singles. (The Lp kind, but still)

I truly miss the presence of CD singles. Those were the days of my childhood.
