Unluckiest man ever? Entire Village wins $950Million Lottery
Quote:
except one man who did not buy tickets.
The people of recession-hit Sodeto in Spain danced in the streets after scooping a share of the massive sum.
But Greek filmmaker Costis Mitsotakis did not have anything to celebrate.
He was missed when residents went round collecting cash for the lottery draw — called El Gordo or the Fat One.
The result was that 69 homes shared in the prize while he got nothing.
A share of a ticket with the winning number 58,268 would have cost him £4 and netted him £83,000.
El Gordo has a total of 1,800 winning tickets costing around £16 each but they are actually split up into four tickets or "participations" sold together.
The villagers won a total of £100million and some bagged millions after buying multiple shares despite a squeeze on household budgets.
The remaining £500million went into the hands of locals in the nearby town of Granen and neighbouring villages.
They have all since been awash with bankers and salesmen trying to relieve them of some of their new-found wealth.
Mayor Rosa Pons said at the time of the win: "Some of the ladies talked about going to the hairdresser.
"But the hairdresser won, too. And she said, 'I'm not working today'. So that ended that."
The whole thing is worth a read, I just bolded the last part because I thought it was funny.
And I converted the currency: £500million = $950 million US.
Back when we we're about 10/11, all of my friends found money in a parking lot and I was the only one who didn't get any because I was a little late going into the parking lot.
