This matter came to my mind while watching a talent-show on TV where a middle-aged male singer was asked about his musical inspirations, and one of the judges asked him, sarcastically,
Maybe Lady Gaga...or Rihanna?, and everybody on the set started to laugh.
So, I wonder: do you think people watch Pop as an artistic expression? Most of my friends loathe all of my faves because they're pop girls, while they prefer rock or indie acts. Are the pop girls and pop bands watched as artists, or as discography puppets and $ machines?
While nobody aware of their creative process can doubt the artistry of, for example, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, I feel like they don't get the recognition they deserve. Most of the people keep on watching them as manufactured products with zero artistic integrity. Where is the problem? On their image? The style of music they make (since when is a musical genre superior to others)? The fact they're young, pretty and successful? A mix of those facts?
What do you need to be taken seriously? My fave is looked down because of her weirdness, apparently, while she writes and produces her stuff, and sings properly, and plays an instruments and those things. But, is it
really her image? What about other
weird groups/singers like KISS, David Bowie, Marilyn Manson, Grace Jones...?
