Is it harder to get a #1 single without a feature nowadays?
2011's Billboard Hot 100 #1 Singles with Features:- Katy Perry featuring Kanye West, "E.T."
- Rihanna featuring Britney Spears, "S&M"
- Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack, & Nayer, "Give Me Everything"
- LMFAO featuring Lauren Bennett & GoonRock, "Party Rock Anthem"
- Katy Perry featuring Missy Elliott, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) [Remix]" - Missy's not credited, but the remix pushed it to #1.
- Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera, "Moves Like Jagger"
- Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris, "We Found Love"
2011's Billboard Hot 100 Solo #1 Singles:
Katy Perry, "Firework"
Bruno Mars, "Grenade"
Britney Spears, "Hold It Against Me" [1 week only]
Wiz Khalifa, "Black and Yellow" [1 week only]
Lady Gaga, "Born This Way"
Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"
Adele, "Someone Like You"
As you can see, there are really only 5 songs from solo artists that were multiple week smash #1's.
2011 Mainstream Top 40 #1 Singles with Features:- Enrique Iglesias featuring Ludacris & DJ Frank E, "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)"
- Katy Perry featuring Kanye West, "E.T."
- Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack, & Nayer, "Give Me Everything"
- Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera, "Moves Like Jagger"
- Gym Class Heroes featuring Adam Levine, "Stereo Hearts"
- David Guetta featuring Usher, "Without You"
- Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris, "We Found Love"
Bad Meets Evil featuring Bruno Mars, "Lighters" also came very close to #1
It's also not just the Top 40 / Hot 100 charts that are overloaded with featured #1's in 2011.
2011 R&B/Hip-Hop #1 Singles with Features:- Jamie Foxx featuring Drake, "Fall for Your Type"
- Nicki Minaj featuring Drake, "Moment 4 Life"
- Chris Brown featuring Lil' Wayne & Busta Rhymes, "Look at Me Now"
- Kelly Rowland featuring Lil' Wayne, "Motivation"
- DJ Khaled featuring Drake, Rick Ross, & Lil' Wayne, "I'm on One"
- Big Sean featuring Kanye West & Roscoe Dash, "Marvin & Chardonnay"
- Lil' Wayne featuring Drake, "She Will"
- Jay-Z & Kanye West, "*****s in Paris"
Now I'm not saying it's impossible to get a #1 hit as just the solo artist on the track, clearly there have been people to do it in 2011.
BUT, what I AM saying is that having a feature single released gives you hugely higher chances to get a smash #1.
This also isn't the first year where this is true. 2010 had a hefty amount of #1 hits that were also features.
However it seems as though throughout this year it became much more prevalent that having a feature was the most helpful ticket to the #1 spots.
Any thoughts? I figured this would be a good topic for discussion.

How it that relevant to the discussion? You love to try it.

I wasn't trying to shade her, but what I'm saying is that even though they were two extra solo tracks to go #1, they showed no longevity at the top spot [or really on the charts for that matter].
However if they both had features, they probably could've prolonged their stay at the top.

As if feat. Calvin Harris makes people want to purchase We Found Love anymore than they would if it were solely Rihanna.

Now you know damn well nobody knows who Calvin Harris is.
And the few who do, didn't listen to that song for him.
LMAO at us posting the same thing at the same time.

The artist doesn't matter.
I know damn well people didn't buy LMFAO's track for the Lauren Bennett and GoonRock features.
You're missing the point.

...It's not harder without a feature
I'm sorry but I don't really "credit" Lauren Bennett and Calvin Harris as the reasoning behind the success
Not really fair though to Calvin Harris because his beat *****...but I still overlook it

I don't get it. Is there something wrong about features/collaborations?

So much shade in this... 1 week only... Calvin Harris... this is not relevant. WFL is solo by Rihanna from start to finish. Quit the shading business and find something else to do.

I'm not crediting them for the reason behind the success either.
But they are still featured tracks with featured artists.
The songs with features are more powerful on the charts, no matter who the featured artist is.

Maybe it's just a trend that almost everyone is collaborating with someone else these days.

I thought Black and Yellow had like Snoop Dog and T-Pain and other people in it? Maybe not?
But anyways, A feature won't make it harder to get a number one. If anything, it is helpful since it can help the song appeal to a wider audience.
That said, you can still get #1s alone, but there is no denying that features can make it easier.

Rihanna went to Calvin Harris for a reason. He gives the song credibility and broadens the appeal of the track, since a casual listener who’s not a fan of pop music is likely to check it out after seeing a dance artist/producer on it, since the general public perceives her as a typical pop girl.

It's not a solo #1, so while it's not a feature it still has more than one artist on the track.

I'm not saying there is, all I'm saying is that it's easier to go #1 with a feature.
I really wasn't trying to be negative with this.

You didn't get it. It doesn't matter who the artist is and how big is, it seems the public is more attracted to the idea that the song is a featuring. Just like The David Guetta's tracks....
