Discussion: Why is rock music fading?

With the exception of Coldplay, this year rock music has really faded, in terms of success. Bands like Evanescence and Red Hot Chili Peppers, who a few years back sold 5m (The Open Door) and 8m (Stadium Arcadium) worldwide, are struggling to sell even a million worldwide. Yes, album sales have decreased immensely since 2006 but even then that wouldn't account completely for such a huge drop in sales and poor longevity. Is the general public too obsessed with pop / dance songs about partying and sex and generic beats? However by that logic Nickelback's latest singles should be selling by the bucketload, although signs point towards their latest album Here And Now suffering a similar fate to RHCP and Evanescence's latest releases. Do you think this is just a fad and rock will explode again or will this electropop trend send rock to the grave (success-wise, not quality-wise ofcourse)?

There is not much innovation going on. The vets aren't putting out good material, and the closest things we have to rock bands are "indie" bands. Plus, Rock is going through a natural decline like other genres in recent years. Pop wasn't always on top. Look at what dominated radio for a good portion of last decade - Hip Hop. Now that's struggling. R&B even more so.

I think it's mostly because solo females are taking over now. Men and bands don't have it as easy. I think once the solo female trend tapers off then we'll see some more variety.

This year, it isn't, and it won't.
As long as the major modern band will release music, it will still live on, because clearly people are here for them

Evanescence, KoRn, Marilyn Manson, NIN and many more should still be slaying. I will never forgive pop music for sending all my rock/metal favs to their graves.

people may be here for them but the problem is that they dont buy their music.

i love rock music and i hope there is a resurgence in its popularity soon.

The important thing to remember is that the music industry is cyclical. It wasn't THAT long ago when Nickelback and Linkin Park were in or near the top 10 of the Hot 100 often. A couple of bands that are toiling away in the underground or are doing well on rock radio but not elsewhere will break through into the mainstream, and rock music will rise from the ashes yet again. It's just a matter of when.

Modern pop music uses electronic based club songs so people who actually know how to play instruments aren't given any real opportunities.

Being able to have musical talent will return eventually, until then you can get by without knowing a drum from a guitar.

I think we're at the very end of the "rock era" (IMO it has finished). This culture is fading fast, the last big movement was grunge/alternative and that was 20 years ago. Oh well it couldn't go forever, but I miss rock bands slaying the charts once in awhile

Popular music goes through waves, phases, fads. It'll see a resurgence again. Anyone who says its dead/dying is dumb as hell tbh.

It's shame, but rock fans (and fans of other genres for that matter) aren't doing anything about it. You complain about the current state of music, but you're not making an attempt to change it. Go buy the albums and you can change what's popular.

I think it will come back, but it will take some innovation. Whenever rock does come back, it will be in a new style from what is now, kind of like how grunge broke out in the 90s. Except I highly doubt it will sound like grunge

Rock peaked with all of those legendary 60s & 70s bands, and the current rock groups aren't innovative enough to make rock appealing to the masses.

I still listen to Rock, but let's fact it....they all sound the same these days, it's pretty rare to find a rock act doing something innovative.
