I think these 3 already missed the mark, Britney came closest.

GaGa is the one with the most cultural impact, so she would be the closest. However, she is definitely missing something so far.

Katy, Ke$ha and Rihanna have a nice list of hits but that's all they are hits.

Gaga is the only one who has had an iconic moment with Bad Romance. But even that considerably pales in comparison to a lot of Madonna's work. It's a lot harder now though because people aren't as sensitive as they once were. Partly because of Madonna.

I see. But IMO Gaga understands better the power of performance, fashion, show business and pop culture. She has a lot to improve in the musical part, for sure, but so did Madonna with her first albums - they have a lot of fillers.

Madonna's discography is overrated

Gaga. Madonna has done everything, broken trends, and set them. Just as Madonna has redefined sex in POP, Gaga is setting out redefine beauty and "weird" in POP.

Just as Madonna has desensitized us to sex in POP, Gaga is doing the same with her fashion as she admits her Monsters are desensitized to the shock fashion, and the public soon too.

It's not even just about Madonna's music IMO. It's about what she did and said with it. That is why she is so highly regarded.

+1 Madonna was controversial. Not just in the way she dressed, but in the things she said and did. That's the difference between her and today's stars.

The OP edited to include Britney, Bey, etc. after I posted. But I still stand by what I said. Madge is irreplaceable. You still don't fully understand the power of great pop music. It's dawning on you slowly.

I think instead of people comparing artists to Madonna to outshine her, we should place them beside her.

As the biggest artists of today have rose to the top with their own talents, as Madonna rose to the top by working her own talent too.

Shocking fashion is the closest thing I could compare atm that the public has gotten used to besides sex.
