look at MLJ in UK. staying 8 weeks in top 3 and 6 weeks at #2 without reaching #1.
#1s were shooting up and falling down the next week throughout that time.
MLJ is at least 5x bigger than any of those, but it still failed to reach the top.

The UK charts are based on sales only, right? On BB, airplay keeps most songs from tumbling like that.

yes. but US sales are not as spiky as UK sales anyway. and most UK #1s debuted at #1 compared to 19 in US.

The billboard hot 100 is overrated.
Good quality music can be found other places people just dont want to put in the effort of searching for it so they let the billboard & charts decide for them. Its great if a song is successful and lots of people buy it and you enjoy that song- but when you look to the billboard like it means EVERYTHING then its a problem.
